Agent Carol Torres

Carol peeked in to James’ office to see the outbox on his desk was full yet. She was waiting for a few files so that she could add them to a folder, type them up, and close the case. She had a few extra copies of the forms he liked doling out on his underlings to placate him in case he was bothered by her arrival. Interactions with the English agent tended to be tense at best, and she would prefer to keep things lowkey today. She was supposed to meet with her father’s oncologist after lunch and she really did not need work stress on top of real life stress.

"What are you doing?"

James, just returned from a bathroom break, frowned at Carol suspiciously. While he had not interacted with the collie agent much, he had disapproved of her acting as Harmonizer's warden and had shown it. How she was currently acting set off some warning bells.

"Shouldn't you be at your desk, Agent Torres?

Agent Carol Torres

“Afternoon, Sir,” Carol straightened and saluted him out of habit. “I’m here for the Adder case files. I was checking to see if it was a good time to ask for them. I need them before one today, Sir.”

James Wolfe

"Hmm..."

Giving Carol one last frown, he entered his office and brought out the files for her. All completed and neatly packed into a yellow folder.

"Next time, send me a text before you arrive. Or even a note. It should not be hard... much like when you neglected to inform me, the person in charge of the convict's case, that you had decided her sentence without my agreement."

Agent Carol Torres

Carol flattened her ears and flushed. “Yes Sir, apologies, Sir. Thank you. I will be more considerate next time.”

She tucked the folder under arm and started to give her embarrassed regards when a few words struck a chord with her.
“Forgive me, Agent Wolfe, I mean no disrespect, but you were emotionally compromised on that case.”

Two can play the psyche card, Wolfe. Being angry and jaded and immovable on a case is just as compromising as caring too much about the outcome. Carol had asked for advice and stayed out of the case as much as her conscience would allow, but she did not regret keeping tabs on Harmonizer’s case. There is no telling what would have happened to Harmonizer, or SHUSH itself, if Carol had not followed her gut and her mental catalog of the smells different hormones and endorphins let off.

James Wolfe

"Excuse me? I think you were the one who was emotionally compromised," James narrowed his eyes. "Your attachment over that supervillain had caused so much trouble. Agent Connor was shot. Civilians were attacked and hurt. Over thirty agents were hospitalised. I wanted her brought to justice and sentenced to solitary confinement, but thanks to you, she is getting off scot-free. She has you wrapped around her little finger. The next time she hurts someone again... you won't have anyone else to blame but yourself."

He closed the distance between her as he spoke, fists clenching.

"I wonder how your friends and family can even look you in the eyes."

Agent Carol Torres

Not many could look the stern English agent in the face without breaking. Carol felt her stomach drop and twist into a ball from his harsh words, but unlike him, she had sought advice and feedback. She’d asked J. Gander, Dr. Rousseau, and a few other agents if she should stay out of the case, since she had questioned whether her instincts and training were wrong. She had flat out Asked J. Gander to order her off the case if he thought she was in the wrong. They all affirmed what she believed, and that gave her the strength to hold her ground.

“Sir, you acted preemptively on the presumption an eye witness in an unconnected case had villainous intentions. If you had spoken to the director first, instead of organizing a task team to try to corner a frightened and panicking witness, there is a possibility that the outcome of this case would have been entirely different, and Agent Connor might not have been caught in the cross fire.
“As for said witness, I have recorded all of my interactions with her if you wish to review them, and I have a tracker on her and a strict schedule for her to maintain.”

Carol had offered the house arrest option because she feared Harmonizer’s powers could have put SHUSH or the state prison in jeopardy if Harm was upset or manipulated by other prisoners. Plus Harm’s father could have broken her out of jail. Putting one compassionate warden in charge of Harm’s parole was riksy, but it was the safest and fairest option Carol could think of, and the director had approved. Plus Harm had been treated injustly.

James Wolfe

James rolled his eyes. "Oh, I'm sure the outcome would have been entirely different," he said sardonically. "More people would have been hurt. Many more would have died. Maybe she would have completely destroyed St Canard! Is this what you want?" he growled. "It may have been a preemptive move, but from the way she acted, it was more than justified. Frightened and panicked? More like violent and manipulative. You still can't see how she's using you. If I had my way, I would have her harmonica destroyed, and her thrown in Aquatraz for at least twenty years. And as for speaking to the director... I think everyone here knows he's too soft-hearted to lead this agency."

He straightened and folded his arms. "You know what? I would like all those recordings. I want to know everything she's told you. You can't be trusted."

Agent Carol Torres, January 2019

Carol’s eyes widened briefly before shifting back to a neutral expression.

“You already know what I want, Agent Wolfe. Justice is and will always be my primary concern. What she did to SHUSH is deserving of punishment, yes, and she is paying with her freedom.”

She frowned.
“Need I remind you that you pursued Harmonizer before she was used by Negaduck to harm us? I understand your position and I know you are trying to protect the many, by sacrificing one possible threat. But this is one case where I had to draw the line, Sir. You were willing to destroy an innocent before she was guilty of a crime. I’ve seen too many people hurt without probable cause and evidence, just because they acted suspiciously.”

Pain filled her face at a memory until she pushed it back into its mental compartment.

“Agent Gryzlikoff has already reviewed everything up to date. I’ll send copies of my first four interviews when I return to my desk.”

Everything she had recorded in those interviews was professional, and common knowledge for Hooter and Gryzlikoff. She kept some private conversations with Harmonizer off the record, though, and only recorded them in a private journal she was keeping for her own peace of mind, since she did not wish to forget some of the information on threats Harmonizer had encountered. Some things were too sensitive and personal to share with anyone except the director and whomever he put on the case. She respected Harmonizer’s privacy and rights too much to reveal everything about her to someone like Agent Wolfe.

Carol glanced at her watch and frowned.
“Pardon me, Sir, but I am running against the clock today. I need to get back to my desk.”

James Wolfe

"You call this paying for her freedom?" James looked incredulous. "Having nights out, SHUSH missions, and times she is left alone while you're here at work?? You don't even lock her up or anything! I know she is planning something. And because of your trust and negligence, she is going to succeed."

He slammed his fist on the doorframe when Carol tried to remind him about how Negaduck used the criminal, clearly frustrated and angry.

"Need I remind you that she was already working for Negaduck before that?" he growled softly. "She was never innocent. And there was no reason for her to act suspiciously if she truly was innocent! Open your eyes, agent. Or someone is going to het hurt one day, and you better hope it's only you."

He looked annoyed when she said she needed to leave, but gestured for her to do so.

"I'll be making you another psychiatric appointment tomorrow," he called after her.

Ll

Agent Carol Torres

“Nights out that she earned after spending a month locked in her room with access only to the restroom, and a security alarm on the window. I’ve allowed her to interact with someone I think will help keep her accountable. I make her clean up after herself, I coax her to talk when she’d rather clam up, and I record all of my observations. Anything that seems off gets discussed with her, or the director when he has time.
“If she leaves the apartment while I am at work, my phone will alert me, and I will track her. If she removes the tracker or leaves her phone, I go after her. I know her habits well enough to know where to expect to find her. You do not need to worry about my diligence, Agent Wolfe. If I feel unable to complete my tasks as a warden and as a SHUSH agent, I will report immediately to Agent Gryzlikoff and ask to transfer Harmonizer to another responsible agent.”

Carol flinched and raised her brow at James’ display of temper.
“I hope someday the blinders will come off of your eyes, Sir. This determination to see things in a jaded light has already hurt several agents.”

She paused after his last remark and tensed her shoulders, her neck fur bristling slightly.
“Please stop making inferences about my mental stability every time we have a disagreement, Agent Wolfe. We have different viewpoints about one case, and different approaches for how we handle justice. That is all. Everything else, I might surprise you by agreeing with you, depending on the scenario.”
She looked at him earnestly.
“You’re a good agent, Sir, but you are mistaken in your judgment of Harmonizer. Please don’t let that anger carry over to your other cases or agents.”

Agent Carol Torres to Posiduck

“Dr. Mallard?” The collie agent called after knocking politely on Posiduck’s office door. “I’d like to speak with you off the record at your earliest convenience, Sir.”

Agent Carol Torres to Agent Dimitri Von Dran

Carol took a few calming breaths and fanned herself with one of the wasted disciplinary forms Agent Wolfe made agents fill out as punishment. One form was enough. Two was fine if a copy was needed, but five for the same minor infraction was over the top. She had not sought out the vanpire duck’s company to complain about Agent Wolfe, though. She had an entirely different matter on her mind...

She smiled sunnily and swished her tail when Dimitri opened his apartment door, blushing a little when she looked into his blood red eyes.
“Hello. Pardon. I hope I didn’t show up too early.”

She’d arrived at the apartment complex ten mintues ago and she was still fifteen minutes early for their arranged meeting.

“It’s good to see you.”
She waited until she was invited in before speaking seriously.

“Do you mind if I cut right to the chase? This has been weighing on my mind for a long time. I’d like to know what are the odds of a bite causing a sixty seven year old man to lose his life, or go insane from the transformation?”

Trevor Mallard

"It's good to see you too." Dimitri smiled. "Come in."

The question caught him off guard. "I guess it depends on their health and other things." He looked at her in question. "Is something going on?"

Agent Carol Torres

“His...mental health is not great. It’s Dad.” Carol sighed. “He bit and punched me when I visited him yesterday...”
She glanced self consciously at the bandage on her hand.

“The nurses have had to sedate him three times this week, and I hate seeing him drugged into a stupor. That isn’t living... He doesn’t eat or talk then, and when it wears off, Mom said he’s so confused, it makes him upset again. They were both in tears yesterday before he forgot where he was again and fought to get away.” The collie blotted her eyes with a tissue.

Today was a busy day at SHUSH. That was the only reason it hadn't been caught yet.

'It' being the small shadow that darted from wall to desk to wall to corner, occasionally tripping up before hiding behind a flowerpot or printer.

An agent was carrying a large stack of papers when she tripped over something, falling and scattering her paperwork everywhere. She glared as she got to her knees, but saw no object or anyone. Shrugging, she started to pick up all her papers.

Was there an intruder in SHUSH?

...if it is they were doing a bad job at staying undetected. But then again, they hadn't been caught.

Yet.

Carol heard someone fall in the hallway and peeked out of her office.

“Are you alright?” She asked the disgruntled agent, hurrying out to help fetch the scattered papers. As she knelt to grab one that had slid under a recycle bin, her nose quivered. Interesting... She sniffed a little longer before handing the paper to the other agent.

Feliciana entered the workplace as usual- with a cheery disposition to match her happy-go-lucky attitude and she carried a quackerware container full of homemade sweets she would spoil her coworkers and superiors with once a week.

-

After putting the container in the break room for all to enjoy, she headed to her department to clock in, giving anyone she walked by a warm and friendly greeting when she stumbled upon her fellow agents collecting paperwork.

-

"Is everyone okay?" She asked curiously before bending down to assist in the clean up.
James Wolfe
James Wolfe 28. January 2019
Winnifred nodded and smiled, signing with her hands to thank Carol when she helped her with her papers. There were a lot; she dreaded thinking of sorting them into order again.

"I tripped over something," she signed to Feliciana before she took the papers up into her hands again. Seeing Carol sniffing, she stared at her curiously.

Meanwhile, the small intruder had given up for now, and was hiding inside an empty office to rest. And cry in frustration.

“You’re welcome. Yes, we’re fine.” Carol replied politely, automatically scanning and shuffling the papers in her hands into order and handing them to Winnifred. After seeing Winnifred’s questioning look, she shrugged.

“I smelled something...familiar.” She creased her brow in thought. “Do you need any more assistance?”
Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

"'Something familiar'?" Feliciana repeated curiously.

-

Taking a look around, she saw nobody.

-

"Then it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Maybe an agent was late for something and dropped something that Winnifred tripped over?"
James Wolfe
James Wolfe 28. January 2019
Winnifred shook her head and smiled again.

"I'll just... reorganise them from top to bottom myself. Again." she mouthed as she stared at the tall stack of papers in her arms, resigned to her fate. And slightly hopeful that her colleagues would help her, but seeing as they were interested in something else, that was not likely. Besides, this was her job.

She propped them on the nearest empty desk and started to sort them out. Fortunately, a few of them were stapled together so she did not need to do too much.

“Yes. Familiar, like one of our agents, but different...”

For one thing, the agent in question did not normally smell like bubblegum-scented shampoo.

“You could be right.” She smiled at Feliciana, withholding information for now.

She was not catching any fresh whiffs of the odor at the moment so either it had stopped moving or it had left the hallway. Regardless, she wanted to help Winnifred before she went to investigate.

Carol kindly asked if she could help and set to work. She divided the stack into much easier to sort piles in seconds, quickly organizing a few of the small piles for Winnifred. Once the restacking was done (or the source of the scent moved. Whichever came first), Carol bid the other agents good day with a sunny smile and tail wag before going on the hunt. That smell had her curiosity piqued and she followed it to a large indoor planter and to a printer. The printer was understandable but why would any agent check out the innocuous Elephant Ear plant?

Carol glanced at the hall camera to see which angle it was pointing. Hmm. Security might have gotten the mysterious visitor on camera for a second but it was not at the right angle to catch where Winnifred had tripped. Carol considered going to to security to ask them to check the other hall camera, but if her nose was accurate, then getting armed men on the trail might complicate matters.

The blue jay looked to her watch with a thoughtful hum. She still had a few minutes to spare, and finding someone sounded like a good way to spend those minutes!

-

Making sure Winnifred got the help it looked like she needed, Feliciana followed after the other agent.

-

"Two sets of eyes are better than one when it comes to searching!" She chimed rather cheerfully. "How about I give you a hand in searching for this mystery person? Oh, how about we split up and search!"

-

Before Carol could agree or object to the blue jay's suggestion, Feliciana had already left the room and continued searching down the hall, checking in rooms.
James Wolfe
James Wolfe 7. February 2019
Winnifred brightened when she realised the agents were helping her, and gave Carol and Feliciana each a tight hug and a kiss, then took up the stack of papers again and continued on her way.

If Carol followed her nose, she would realise it was right down the hallway Feliciana was going. Her sharp ears would quickly pick up that, in one of the empty rooms in the furtherest corner, someone was crying quietly.

But it wasn't the sound of a crying adult. It sounded like... a child.

“You’re welcome. See you later, Winnifred.” Carol did not object to the other agent’s hug. She started to reply to Feliciana but the blue jay had already taken off. That wasn’t good protocol, but unlike some agents, she wasn’t going to grumble about the danger of impulsiveness. She went her own way, but it wasn’t long before she picked up the scent, and sound, just down the hall.

Determining that the subject was a child, she detoured back to her office to pick up her purse, returning after Feliciana instigated the first interaction. She stayed in the doorway, smiling gently to avoid frightening the girl and be close in case her assistance was needed in directig the girl to her guardian, or to catch her if she fled.

”Don’t be afraid. We’re like the police; we help people. How can we help you?”
Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles

Feliciana had opened the door when she heard the sound of a child crying, she blinked in confusion as she frowned.

-

A child shouldn't be here, unless the child is related to a worker and has clearance to enter...Right?

-

"Ciao~?" She greeted, curiously looking around for said child. Turning her head to see Carol, she smiled before getting on her knees so she would be at eye-level to that of a child's, hoping it would make the child feel safe.

-

"Did you get lost in this big place? I do too, sometimes!" She giggled. "My name is Feliciana Carioca-Pistoles! My friend and I would very much like to help you find whoever you are looking for if you let us."

The little wolf cub gasped and backed up a bit, but she was soon won over by their kind gestures, and inched forward a little, toying with her pigtails.

"Mum said I'm not supposed to talk to strangers..." she said softly, her voice clear with a British accent.

But then again... she said not to talk to her big brother, but he was lovely to her, wasn't he?

"I'm looking for my big brother, Jamy. He said he worked here. I wanted to surprise him. But I don't know where he is..." she looked sad again. "Am I in trouble? The security wouldn't let me in so I slipped past them."

Feliciana studied the wolf cub curiously. Something did seem familiar with her, it was bothering her that she couldn't place what though.

-

"That is very good of your mother to teach that, but I assure you that Agent Mom and I are the friendliest and least strange people he--"

-

Her eyes wandered to the clock. Oh crap. She was a half hour late, James was going to make her do a boring report about tardiness as soon as she showed up!

-

All the more reason to help this cute little girl.

-

"I assure you that you are not in trouble and I also promise to help you find your brother if you'll let me." She smiled. "Could you introduce yourself, please? I bet your name is adorable just like you~!"

-

Also knowing the last name would help. Feliciana knew a lot of people here given her friendly attitude.
James Wolfe
James Wolfe 20. February 2019
"But I want to find Jamy!" she waved her hands in frustration. "They don't know I'm here. They won't let me see him!"

She frowned at Feliciana, momentarily suspicious. She looked like a faerie. What if she gave her name, only to be tricked? Okay, maybe that was silly. The fae were usually little. And they did only kidnap her once, long story, they won't be looking for her again. Besides these people just wanted to help! And the sooner she could find him, the better.

"I'm Caroline," she said, blushing at the compliment. "Caroline Wolfe."

And so it begins.

Unsurprised by the name that her nose had already confirmed, Carol tilted her head in thought. “Your parents don’t like James?”

That explains a lot.

“Pleased to meet you, Caroline. I’m Carol. I was named after Christmas songs.” The collie smiled and wagged her tail. “Don’t worry. We’ll take you to your brother. Give me just one minute to check in with him and see if he is in his office...”

Hiding the uneasiness she started feeling, Carol took out her phone and messaged James.

“Are you at your desk, Agent Wolfe? I have a special delivery you need to see promptly.”

After receiving confirmation, Carol let out her breath and gestured to the door. “He’s waiting.”

"James is your brother?!"

-

The blue jay was surprised at hearing that her supervisor-- her grumpy paperwork-loving supervisor had a little sister that was way too adorable for words! And he didn't tell her?! Or anyone?! Why?!

-

"Your brother is my boss!" Who was going to punish her for being late. For the fifth time this month. Maybe he'll be so happy to see his sister that he'll forget all about it?

-

Wishful thinking, girl.

-

"I can take her to him if that's okay with you, Carol?"
James Wolfe
James Wolfe 20. February 2019
Caroline gasped at Carol. "We have almost the same names!!" she giggled, looking less shy. "What's your favourite Christmas song?"

As she waited for Carol to call her brother, she glanced at Feliciana, who claimed to be his employee.

"Are you an acckou- actaw- accountant too?" she asked, tilting her head to the side. "It must be really difficult! I can't ever learn math well like all of you can!"

Hearing her brother was waiting for her, she beamed and took both their hands.

"He'll want to thank you both for helping me! He's the nicest, most sweetest person ever!"

The both of them maaaay wonder briefly if they were mistaken about who her brother was...

Of course, when they reached his office, there was without a shred of doubt that James was her brother.

"Jamy!!"

"Carrie??" James seemed to be frowning before they entered, but then his jaw dropped, and the shock on his face was quickly replaced with two expressions the agents probably thought was foreign to him. A glowing happiness as he tenderly hugged the little wolf who jumped into his arms, followed by fear as he glanced at the two agents, turning white as a sheet under his tawny fur. His grip tightened slightly around Caroline before he put her down on his chair, never taking his eyes off the girls.

"Carrie... if you don't mind... I need to... have a friendly chat with your escorts. Uh, if you're hungry... I have sandwiches in the second drawer."

The look he gave Carol and Feliciana was anything but friendly, however. "Outside, now!" he mouthed, looking positively murderous.

“‘O Holy Night’,” Carol’s tail resumed swishing. Caroline was a cutie!

She flattened her ears when Feliciana offered to take Caroline to James, and started to say she would do it herself since James already did not like her, but Caroline grabbed her hand before she got a word out.

“Oh- Uh... I’m glad he’ll be happy to see you.” The collie agent forced herself to appear and sound positive, but her stomach was already doing flips.

James’ shock was pretty much what she had expected, but the rapid fire change from delight to fear to venom was more than she’d ever seen on his face before. It was reassuring to know he did have someone he cared deeply for. At least he wasn’t as alone and aloof as Carol had worried he might be.

She nodded in understanding and about-faced, glancing up and down the hall once they were out the door. Was it too late to send Feliciana away to protect her? Probably. He’d already seen her. She breathed in and out deeply a few times to steel her nerves for the incoming lecture.

Feliciana gave a knowing smile at what Caroline had said about James. She knew he wasn't a bad guy deep down! Oh, wait until she tells all the others! Then they will believe her when she's said that he isn't really a bad person!

-

Upon seeing the two siblings reunite, the blue jay let out a soft and quiet aw as she happily watched. They even had cute sibling nicknames! She always wondered what it was like to have siblings. Her cousins all had siblings, but she was an only child.

-

The blue jay frowned a little at the face the wolf had made to them. Why did she have the feeling she was going to be in more trouble now than before?

-

Before leaving the room, Feliciana cheerfully said a goodbye to the wolf cub before following Carol out into the hall.

After checking the door to make sure it was shut, James took a deep breath... and then exploded on them.

"Do you have ANY idea what you just did??" he snarled furiously as he glared at them, both arms suddenly coming up to grab their collars, backing them up against the wall roughly. "You have no idea how much I sacrificed for her to grow up, safe and happy. I did all I could to keep her and my family away from danger, away from my enemies and what I do for work, and I am not about to see it undone like this! What were you thinking?? She's all I have. And if you think I am going to pretend none of this ever happened, you better think again," he growled, his eyes narrowing as his grip tightened on the collars. "I'm going to see to it the both of you will lose your jobs and your memories for this."

From the look on his face... murder was likely not out of the question either. But under that furious expression, he was scared. The shaking was not from rage, but from fear. How many knew already?? Did he have to relocate them? What if a mole at SHUSH found out? He needed to get her out of here. But after dealing with the threats first...

Carol instinctively held an arm out to shield Feliciana and she started to speak but the tightness in her collar hurt. She gripped his wrist with one hand and looked into his furious eyes. Unabashed and unintimidated until he brought up memory erasure, Carol tightened her grip on James’s hand.

“Agent Wolfe, you are emotionally compromised right now. Please release us and back up one meter so that we may discuss this properly.”

And in the likelihood that he did not heed her firm yet non-threatening request, Carol changed her attitude to soft and sympathetic, consciously widening her eyes and lowering her ears and chin to look up at him more submissively.

“Would you have preferred we locked her up while she was crying and afraid...?” She asked gently without breaking her gaze from his.

“Her parents do not know she is here, Sir. I thought it best to seek your advice rather than force the child to explain how she slipped past security into our building on her own.

“I apologize if I have erred in my judgement, Sir, but I honestly thought you were the best solution, for her own good. Would you like for us to escort the child to an interrogation room and entertain her until her parents arrive?”

Carol carefully avoided mentioning Caroline’s name in the hopes that James would think she was still unaware of it and start to calm down.

Feliciana's eyes widened, she did not expect her supervisor to get physical with his co-workers just because they helped out his adorable little sister!

-

She was too afraid to speak, she didn't want to risk saying anything that'll further anger and/or upset James.

-

"Y-Yeah, wh-what Carol said...!" She stuttered, waving her hands frantically in an apologetic manner. "I'll be more than happy to help her get Caroline back to your parents and spend time with her, she really is adorable and thinks highly of you! I knew you weren't such a bad guy!"

-

The blue jay had fucked up the collie's hopes...And her rambling nature probably made everything worse.

Good job, Feliciana!

It was at that moment that a tall, suave, and formidable SHUSH legend rounded the corner with a folder in one hand and a coffee in the other. His attention was mostly on the folder until out of his periphery he noticed three figures standing in the hallway.

Frowning he lowered the folder. "Agent Wolfe," he said evenly with a touch of curiosity to his tone. "What is the meaning of this?" He hadn't had much interaction with James or his underlings, since they were in separate departments, but the Special Agent-in-Charge had come down to administration to turn in a few requests for his own task force - namely a request to restart a decades-old one.

James growled fiercely and his grip tightened further as Feliciana mentioned his sister by name.

They knew too much. He had to get rid of them, no matter the cost. He was doing it for her. And his family. And no matter how much kindness they gave her, they had blown his cover. They all would get hurt-

He jumped, paling further when he saw Jacob.

"I just- they were- this isn't what it-" he started to say, though he did immediately let go of the girls.

The door opened.

"Jamy, do you have chocolate sauce?" Caroline asked, munching on the sandwich. She blinked and hid behind the door warily when she saw Jacob. "Hello. Who are you?"

James fell to his knees and covered his face.

Thanks sooo much, Feliciana. Let’s enroll you in a class on reading unspoken cues next month. If we survive today.

Carol hid her grimace at both of her colleagues’ reactions, reaching for James’ other hand to try to free Feliciana from his strong grip. Carol’s long thick fur offered a pillow around her jugular so at least Carol would be safe from strangulation and neck injury a little longer than her more delicately built colleague.

She perked her ears when she heard someone else approaching and lowered her arms. She knew James would concede to the authority of this particular agent, even if he might disrespect this agent’s unconventional methods.

She reached out to help Feliciana catch her balance once James released his grip, offering her a comforting shoulder squeeze. Caroline’s interruption was not very well timed but James’ reaction to it surprised her. Carol stepped alongside him and patted his shoulder gently. She’d let Feliciana and Jacob do the talking for now.

What was wrong with what she suggested?!

And then it hit her. Carol didn't use his sister's name for a reason...She really needs to work on her obliviousness. The blue jay would make sure to make an apology snack for Carol when she got home.

-

"Grazie, Carol." She smiled, rubbing her own neck before she approached the wolf club and knelt down in front of her with a happy smile- as if everything was alright.

-

"Your brother was informing us that he is very busy with boring work and asked us to play with you until your parents come to get you!"

-

"Oh! I brought some baked goods in today to work! Maybe you'd like to try one?"

Jacob raised a brow at James' behavior as he let go of the agents. "Then just what is - " He stopped himself when the office door opened, and now both of his eyebrows were in the air. "Oh...hello little one." A friendly smile spread across his face. "My name is Jacob. Who might you be?"

As Feliciana distracted the child, he glanced back down at James. "There is a daycare on level two, you know," he said mildly.

"Baked goods?" Caroline looked intrigued. "Is there... chocolate?"

She stared at her brother in concern. Was he okay? It wasn't like him not to scold her for wanting sweet treats. But then Jacob's introduction pulled her attention away from him, for now.

"I'm Caroline," she beamed, waving. "Are you an accountant too? You're all really smart."

"You don't understand!!" James looked up from his hands, distraught. Knowing Caroline was in earshot, he switched to Spanish. "I was trying to protect her by keeping my family a secret. But now... they'll know. She's going to get hurt. My family is going to get hurt because of me. Oh, I just signed their death warrants. I'm going to lose them. What have I done??"

Carol’s knowledge of Spanish was limited as very few people in her old hometown spoke anything other than English so it was not required for her to graduate. She knew just enough to understand that James was worried about protecting his family.

“They? Who are you afraid of, Sir? Agent Mallard, Agent...um... Carioca-...Pistoles and I are your sisters and brothers in arms here.” She hoped she’d pronounced that right. She kept her voice hushed.

Feliciana knew Spanish very well, it was the second language she had learned to speak so hearing what he had said causes her to stand up and look to him, a frown of concern and sadness upon her features.

-

"Usted no va a perder a nadie, señor. Solo nos ha dicho esta información y le prometo que ninguno de nosotros dejará que se diga una palabra de esto si no desea que se exponga..."

-

A second later she was in front of her superior, taking hold of his hands as she gave them a comforting squeeze. She could relate to how he felt.

-

"Eres un hermano mayor fantástico para hacer todo lo posible por protegerla, pero no tienes que ocultarla de tus compañeros de trabajo. Aunque entiendo por qué lo harías..."

-

Letting go of his hands, she flashed him a smile.

-

"Me alegra saber que no estás solo."

-

Was all she said before taking Caroline's hand and walked off with her.

-

"You ever had Italian food before, Caroline?"

Jacob was about to answer Caroline with a smile when James interrupted. He frowned again. "Agent Carioca-Pistoles will accompany your sister to the cafe for the time being. Hay mucho para discutir."

He waved fondly at the child, then looked down at James. "Now. What's all this about putting your family at risk?"

James scowled at Carol and flinched from Feliciana, his hands cold and trembling slightly from fear. But he looked less distressed as she spoke, until he could look her in the eye again.

Caroline, meanwhile, squinted as they all started talking in Spanish, as if that would help her understand what they meant. Darn. She should have taken classes!

"Is Jamy okay...?" she asked Feliciana anxiously. He speaks in foreign languages when he doesn't want me to understand him. I don't know why. I just wanna help, or comfort him like he does to me! Can you tell me what he said?" she asked, making her eyes big and adorable.

Resistance is futile. Please?

James waited until the girls were a good distance away, then sighed quietly and closed his eyes. "I suppose... there's no reason to hide it anymore. Most of you know me as an elite agent. What you don't know is that I was handpicked by the Queen herself to obtain that status. I was trained to take down crime rooted deeply in politics, and as a result, I have enemies. From mobs, cartels, spies, even foreign governments, to rich and influential criminals masquerading as businessmen," he said quietly, using the wall as a support to stand. "All of them would stop at nothing to hurt me in revenge for all the plans I've ruined for them, even if it meant hurting innocent people I love. Like my family..." he glanced in the direction Caroline left sadly. This was the first time James had shown so much emotion. It was so raw, as if he had not properly shown emotion for a long time.

"I failed. Word is going to get out. My family is going to suffer..."

Carol frowned and stood resolutely.

“Not if we can help it. I’ll check the security tapes and find out who else has seen her today. With the director’s permission, we can have the tapes edited to splice out her movements. If Caroline is agreeable to it, we can devise an alias and cover story for her, saying she was mistaken when she thought she had a relative in the building. As for smell identification, you could modify your diet and grooming materials to change your scent slightly.

“Any other suggestions, Sirs?” She looked to Agent Mallard.

Oh dear. What was she supposed to say? If she told the truth, James would be very angry and upset-- and she cared more about that than any punishments he would give her. He cared a lot for his family, and that's something she could relate to...Family was everything to her, so she would have to think of a reassuring lie to tell--!

-

OH NO THAT LOOK IS TOO ADORABLE

-

She made a mental note to apologize to her Godfather and fathers for all the times she had used the same look on them for years during her youth.

-

"He's Okay!" She reassured with a smile. "He's been planning a special and super secret surprise for you, so he said it in another language so you wouldn't know what it was!"

-

After taking her to the break room and giving her a chocolate cannoli before kneeling down to her level before whispering. "In fact he told me to come give you this treat so he can talk to his friends about it cause we're all helping him! But you didn't hear it from me, okay?"

-

She then extended a pinkie to her. "Pinkie promise?"

Jacob listened carefully to James, his face impassive and unreadable. Briefly he glanced after Caroline and Feliciana, then back at his peer. He knew all too well what could happen to families when enemies bent on revenge were involved.

"Where have they been all this time, to have evaded any harm?" he asked quietly. "Do they all know you work here?"

James looked up at Carol, almost in disbelief. Why would she help him? They had always been at odds, and they never liked each other. She wasn't even in his department! For a moment, he wondered if she had something to gain from this. But she was always this odd with her cookies and cards and extending friendship to everyone, even helping that criminal...

Oh no. What if she told her this??

He grabbed Carol by the shoulders, looking desperate. "Please. No one can know. Not even your closest friends. Please."

"SHUSH put them under special protection, they live in the countryside and Caroline is enrolled in a good private school," he told Jacob quietly. "I only visit them once every few months. Yes, they know I work as an elite agent... my parents resent me for it. All I wanted to do was protect them and give them the life they deserve..."

He hugged himself and sighed shakily.

***

Yay, success! Or so she thought.

"Pinkie promise!" Caroline sang as she hooked pinkies with Feliciana. She took a bite out of the cannoli, and gasped, her eyes turning bigger. "This is the best thing ever!! It's almost like a chocolate biscuit but there's more chocolate! What is it? What is it??" her tail wagged fast and she hopped up and down.

Carol tensed when James grabbed her again but his pleading look and words tugged on her already melted heart.

“Everything that has transpired is classified, Sir.” She replied soothingly, her tone gentle and her face serious. “All you need to do is contact someone to pick the child up, or arrange to escort her out of the building, and figure out what cover story she should use. Agent Carioca-Pistoles is keeping her safe right now. She can help convince Caroline to use the cover story.

“With your permission, Sirs, I will cover the technicalities with the tapes and let you know if any other agents need to be questioned. Agent Mallard can question them and help me with the Eyes Only case file for this incident. With all four of us working together, there should be no loose ends. We’ve got your back, Agent Wolfe.”

Carol patted his shoulder reassuringly. If that was all they needed from her, she’d take her leave now and get right to work on writing the case file (which only Agents Mallard, Wolfe, Torres, Carioca-Pistoles, Gryzlikoff, and Director Hooter would have access to), and pull up the security tapes.

Feliciana smiled and giggled in amusement at the child's reaction. "I'm glad you enjoy them, Caroline! They're called cannoli, an Italian dessert from my home country. I love to bake goodies like these and bring them to work so everyone can enjoy them!"

-

Now she had to tell James about the lie she had just told his sister. She would be more than happy to help him figure out what to surprise her with!

-

"if you want you can take a box with you to take home and enjoy with your parents?"

"Very good, Agent Torres," Jacob said, then looked again at James. "Do you feel this breach is enough to have them relocated? I would hate to uproot the entire family, but if their safety is at risk..."

James Wolfe 4 hours ago

James took in a few deep breaths and tried to relax. They were all helping him. His family would be safe. He didn't have to worry.

It was still a little difficult to trust someone he had fought with and judged at face value. But... being this close to her, he could not sense any lies or betrayal.

"I can call her parents to pick her up. They probably don't even know she's here. Maybe she could say she went to the wrong address? Although I... I'm not sure if she'd play along. She's already suspicious about my 'accounting' job. And if we relocate them immediately it could look far more suspicious. I'll request for extra surveillance for now and see if she's attracted anyone's attention. Thank you," he added quietly, glancing at both of them.

***

Caroline beamed. "That's so sweet of you! I've been wanting to learn to bake chocolate cake but they keep turning out... wrong."

She pulled out a phone and scrolled through several pictures to show Feliciana several attempts at a chocolate cake that was either undercooked, overcooked, burnt or... exploded(?).

"My parents would love them! Thank you!" she hugged Feliciana tightly. "I'll still be here for a few days. Maybe we can have a baking class together! I mean... if you're not busy and you want to." She played with her ponytail shyly.

Carol’s frown deepened. “She’s wary of strangers.”
Moreso than some agents we know.
“I mentioned we were law enforcement to help calm her and earn her trust.“
Please don’t threaten me again. I didn’t know we were supposed to be “accountants.”

She breathed in slowly and quietly offered her thoughts.

“I don’t know the solution to this scenario, Sir, but in my uninformed opinion, I think a basic version of the truth may be best. You could still say you do a form of accounting by protecting accountants to keep your original cover story intact if she questions you, or you could say Agent Carioca-Pistoles and I are security guards if you prefer. Either way, you could gently tell her that sometimes people in your line of work make other people very unhappy, and that it’s best that she does not tell anyone except her parents about where she went today, so that she does not have to move to a different house or school.”

“It’s up to you what you tell her, Sir. She appears to be at an age where make-believe is still valid, but it may be difficult for her to keep secrets from her acquaintances wherever she attends school. A watered down version of the truth may be best. If you tell her she and her parents might have to move again if she talks about where you work, that might be enough to keep her quiet. Um. You could say accountants sometimes make people mad and
