Corpus Christi - The Day of Thanksgiving for the Institution of Holy Communion.
Today is the feast of Corpus Christi.
It is a day of Thanksgiving for the great blessings of God in Jesus’ sharing of his body and blood with us. Of course, due to this fulminant pandemic, we are unable to gather together to mark together, as a feast, a sacrament he urged us to do in Remembrance of him.
Nevertheless, we must rejoice in the fact that we continue to encounter Jesus Christ and his love for us in each other. We must give thanks for Jesus as the eternal and only bread and cup, who sustains us, helps us to relate to one another as one body.
Our Thanksgiving today must, therefore, be framed with renewed resolve and undimmable passion for holding onto each other in that communion with Christ.
Let us care for each other as if their life and our spiritual fortunes depend on it. The truth, of course, is that their life and our spiritual sanctity does depend on such care. After all, it is a care to which God's generous example calls us in Jesus Christ. From the gifts and drama, the salient lesson is this:
"Here's the full esteem of my love for you: my broken body and my flowing blood. Now go and do likewise. 'Love one another as I have loved you.' Or as he repeats it elsewhere 'Love your neighbour as yourself.'
So let us do so with acts of solidarity for the causes to which Christ calls God's church in this challenging time and for all time: to display to the powers and principalities God’s wisdom in its rich variety.
Let us bless our community and the people around us with the life-giving relationship anchored and flowing from the body and blood of Christ.
In the name of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
