AOMD or Acute Onset Mental Deterioration is a sudden depressive psychological episode characterized by the following symptoms, with the first three symptoms being the main symptoms characterizing this episode.
There are two major factors that cause AOMD — physical fatigue and mental fatigue. It usually takes a combination of them to cause AOMD.
Anything that causes physical fatigue such as having an awful sleep, not eating on time, dehydration, and stress increases the chances of this episode.
As for mental fatigue, those who experience a low frequency of quality social interactions, giving up on something, and persistently chasing something that doesn't seem to get any closer, significantly contribute to this episode.
Since this episode is usually triggered by trying to complete high energy tasks for an extended period despite the physical or mental fatigue being experienced, the best prevention would be to apply the Energy Cycle in our lives so it won't happen anymore.
Our day is always composed of a bunch of tasks, where we either do something, have fun, or take a rest. However there are often many times when we have done a lot of things and still feel that it isn't enough and we want to do more things.
Other than convincing ourselves that we are enough, another solution is to switch to a different type of task that we can do better until our energy had recovered enough to return to the previous type of task again.
There are two types of tasks in the Energy Cycle — the high-energy tasks and the low-energy tasks. Energy Cycle is about alternately switching from one type of task to another to minimize fatigue and maximize productivity as much as possible.
Some examples of high-energy tasks are:
- Completing an urgent and important work
- Doing professional and career stuff
- Chatting and talking to others
- Playing a game
- Watching anime
- Reading an intensely immersive webtoon
Some examples of low-energy tasks are:
- Reading ebooks
- Writing a simple or casual article
- Completing mini-tasks (not social media)
- Testing an app
- Making plans
The Energy Cycle states that we must move in life like a wave, so we should alternate between high energy and low energy tasks like a cycle. Thus, we can have time to recover our energy and focus without becoming tired at all.
For those who suddenly experience an episode of AOMD, it is important to immediately complete one of three things below for a quick treatment:
- Close all gadgets, devices, and screens then take a 15-minute power nap.
- Close all applications on your screens and journal about your current emotions and situation.
- Read instructional and boring book/ebook to bring yourself back to a low-energy rational state.
Basically, anything that would help you switch energy modes would help. If you have been doing a lot of high-energy tasks, then try switching to low-energy tasks and vice-versa.
It's not difficult when switching from low-energy tasks to high-energy tasks since it can easily be done on a whim or impulse. On the other hand, switching from high-energy tasks to low-energy tasks can be quite difficult, since it requires slowing down your overstimulated mind and regaining focus on the present moment.
Other than the suggested methods above, there are three other techniques that would help someone regain focus and switch to low-energy tasks.
Remember what you came here in this world for. Remember your true reasons for staying alive until now. Remember everything you have experienced and suffered just to arrive at your current situation.
Take your time remembering them, it would be better to write them on a piece of paper or a modern notepad to help you remember. This will help you regain your direction in life by focusing on your purpose.
After you have done this, your mind shall be clearer and more rational than before. You'll feel that you have more energy and motivation to complete important tasks, provided that you are not physically fatigued.
A quick and simple method to instantly regain focus. Just imagine something blue or white in the middle of the darkness with increasing zoom and intensity, then you'll be able to switch your mind to a low-energy rational state.
You can imagine anything, as long as they're colored blue or white in the middle of the darkness.
A glowing blue dot or white dot is the most simple, any shapes are good too. Just avoid imagining anything with lots of chaos and animations, then it would work just fine.
For this method, you will inject at least 1000 volts of electricity into your brain, forcefully calming all your neurons, bringing them to their relaxed, low-energy states.
Of course, you are not going to use real electricity. I hope you didn't try it immediately after reading the previous paragraph.
Follow the steps below to accomplish this method:
AOMD is a serious psychological episode and the longer it goes untreated, the greater the loss of productivity, hope, and sense of identity.
Although it goes away on its own when the affected person has decided that they had enough of it, it may turn into a full chronic depression at worst if the affected person didn't manage to make that decision for some reason.
Therefore, it is recommended to get it treated as soon as possible and follow the prevention procedures to prevent it from happening in the first place.
We should always be aware of our energy levels and be ready to switch to a low-energy or high-energy state whenever necessary.
Since mental fatigue causes physical fatigue and physical fatigue hastens mental fatigue, it is essential to keep track of and maintain our energy levels for a healthy and productive life.
"Look, it's my first documentation of a psychological ailment! So cool!"
"There's only so much energy and time we can spend in a day, at least 80% of it shall be directly or indirectly related to our purpose in life."
