100,000 people visit Macau every day not only in Easter but also in Qingming

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandez, director of the Macau government's tourism agency, said she was "hopeful" the city could get 100,000 visitors every day during the holiday season of Qingming, Macau's biggest tourist market, and Easter, only in Hong Kong and Macau.

"We are currently targeting 100,000 people compared to 70,000 to 80,000 non-holiday days," Ms Sena Fernandez told local media at the event on Thursday.

Mainland authorities have designated this year's Qingming Festival - a time when Chinese people around the world honor their ancestors - from April 4 (Thursday) to Saturday. In Hong Kong, Macau's second most important tourist resource market, the specific holiday is limited to April 4.

In Hong Kong, like Qingming, the Easter season, which complies with the lunar timetable, will be held from March 29 (Friday) to April 1 (Easter Monday) this year.

Macau's tourism boss noted that over the two festive periods, "we don't expect to see as many visitors during the Chinese New Year holiday."

During the Lunar New Year holiday, which includes mainland China, from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, Macau's total number of visitors reached nearly 1.36 million, an average of nearly 170,000 per day.

Dragon Trail International, a marketing and research organization focused on mainland consumers, said in a recent travel sector review that outbound travel by the sector, or crossing mainland boundaries, could exceed pre-pandemic 2019 levels by 2025. This year, such a scale could reach "80%" of 2019.

Mainland people made 3.6 million overseas trips during the Lunar New Year period, or 57% of the 6.31 million overseas trips in 2019, the agency said, citing figures from China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

"China's five-day holiday around Labor Day on May 1 will be a significant time in terms of trends, followed by an autumnal golden holiday covering China's National Day on October 1," Dragon Trail International said in a review.
