Possibility of sale of Nagasaki theme park believed to be IR location

The creator of the Huistenboshi theme park (pictured) in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, is considering selling the complex to a Hong Kong investment fund, local media reported, citing unnamed sources. No potential suitors have been identified.

In 2019, the operator of the Huistenbosh and the governments of Nagasaki Prefecture and Sasebosh announced an agreement to designate the site and part of the building of the Huistenbosh amusement park as a candidate site for the Integrated Resort (IR).

Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park is operated by Huis Ten Bosch Co., a subsidiary of Japan-based HIS Co Ltd. Located in Sasebo, the facility replicates famous buildings and structures in the Netherlands, but is in Japan's semi-farm environment.

On April 26, Osaka and Nagasaki Prefecture announced that they each submitted their IR district development plans to the national government in time for the April 28 deadline. They were the only local authorities to make a bid to host the casino resort. According to Japanese media reports, the national government's response to the application may come around the fall.

According to the Asahi Shimbun, Heusten Bosch controls 66.7% of the theme park's stake. Shareholders of theme parks such as Kyushu Electric Power Co. and Saibu Gas Co. are also expected to sell their holdings, according to sources cited by the media.

Huis Ten Bosch posted a net loss for the second consecutive year in the 12 months to September 2021.
