This time the state is introducing a new form of online gambling instead of casinos.
On Tuesday, the North Carolina Board of Education Lottery voted to offer digital instant games online. Online lottery games work similarly to digital scratch tickets and will be available until Nov. 15.
North Carolina Lottery Adds To Game Portfolio
This is not the first time North Carolina has expanded its online lottery offering. In April, the Lottery Board added two popular lottery-style games to its list of titles that players can purchase.
In addition to multistate titles such as Mega Millions and Powerball, customers also have access to Pic 3, Pic 4, and Carolina Cash 5. However, according to NC Lotto executive director Mark Michalko, it is necessary to add more games. "We have to do this," Michalko told WRL News.
The committee said it would put a limit on how much a player can gamble in a day, week, or month.
Daily limit: $505
State limit: $2,000
Monthly limit: $4,000
Digital Lottery Will Bring Additional Revenue To North Carolina
In addition, the committee estimated that digital scratch tickets could generate more than $416 million in additional revenue in the state within five years.
"As a committee, we don't know what the landscape of the game will look like over the next year in North Carolina," Chris Hayes said in a WRL news post.
Earlier this year, Governor Roy Cooper included revenue from digital instant games in his proposed two-year budget.
The governor included $81 million in revenue for the 2023-24 fiscal year beginning in July. It also includes revenue of $111 million for fiscal year 2024-25.
