'Goal fireworks' in the Champions League
It was a feast of attacking soccer that lived up to the nickname "preview final. The UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarterfinal first leg of the 2023-2024 UEFA Champions League (UCL) on Tuesday ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw between Real Madrid and Manchester City. The game was filled with picturesque shots and passes that thrilled the crowd. Initially, when the two teams were drawn in last month's draw to meet early in the quarterfinals, there was a reaction that the best-of-five matchup was set up too early. City won the UCL last year and Real won the year before. In the process, the two teams met in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row, with the winner taking home the trophy. Many believe that the winner of this matchup will be crowned UCL champions once again.
City took the early lead. In the second minute of the first half, Bernardo Silva sent a low, quick, direct free kick across the face of goal. It was a bit far from the goal, so he thought he was going to cross it to the middle, but he surprised the keeper by taking a direct shot. Real equalized in the 12th minute when Eduardo Camabinga's left-footed mid-range effort deflected off a City defender's leg and into the net, and two minutes later, Hodriga doubled the lead when he dribbled in front of goal and slipped the ball past the keeper with a defender in front of him.
City fought back hard in the second half. Phil Foden equalized in the 21st minute with a curling shot into the top left corner of the net, and five minutes later, Josuco Gvardiol restored the lead with a powerful mid-range strike. It wasn't over yet. Real equalized in the 34th minute when Vinicius Junior's left-footed cross from the left side of the penalty box was met by Federico Valverde with a low volley from the edge of the box. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth affair, with no further goals scored. The second leg of the quarterfinals will be played at the Etihad Stadium on Aug. 18 at home to Man City.
On the same day, Arsenal (England) and Bayern Munich (Germany) also drew 2-2. The Gunners scored one goal apiece, as did Victor Moses and Leandro Trosar (Arsenal) and Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane (Bayern). Munich defender Kim Min-Jae was on the bench. Both teams were disappointed with the officiating after the game. Arsenal claimed that Xhaka tripped over the leg of Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer inside the penalty box just before the end of the game, but the referee did not call a foul. Munich took issue with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes for bringing down a pass from the goalkeeper after the game was stopped for a substitution in the 22nd minute. "I'm angry that the referee explained to our players that 'this situation is like a child's mistake,'" Munich coach Thomas Tuchel criticized.
