Bet £23,400 on William Hill ruined by 'human error'

A bold bet

Rugby fans Gary Smeaton and Kris Shenton made a very ambitious bet on William Hill nine months ago. The duo backed the Salford Red Devils to finish in the Super League's top five with a score of 8-1. They also doubled the bet with the Super League's award for player of the season, 25-1, that outsider Jackson Hastings will be named Man of Steel.

With a stake of £100, their bet amounted to £23,400.

Surprisingly, when the Red Devils came in third, the double actually came in, with Hastings playing a major role in the club's success.

"I made a bet at the Swinton branch on William Hill nine months ago. The guy in the booking office made a bet for me," Smithton said. "My friend kept the betting slip. We never dreamed the betting slip would come in.

"I didn't think Salford would be in the top five, but I got a feel for Hastings winning Man of Steel. I'm a huge Salford fan. I support Tyrone McCarthy and the Devils mascot."

short-lived joy
However, the duo's joy was briefly interrupted by William Hill, who recently signed with the NBA, saying he should never have made a bet and that he only made it because of "human error."

This is due to the contingency between the two bets, with the Red Devils scoring high, with Hastings having a greater chance of being named Man of Steel than 25 to 1.

A William Hill spokesperson explained: "As stated in our rules, relevant contingencies arise when one or more portions of a bet affect the outcome of a bet. In this case, Jackson Hashing winners Man of Steel and Salford were involved in a top five finish.

"If one outcome happens, the other will be directly affected and so double prices will be significantly lower."

As Smithton put it, "We were on vacation abroad when we beat Wigan to make it to the grand final, and then Jackson won. I was cremated. Even Jackson's mom was happy for me. Then she sent me a message after reading William Hill's comments."

"William Hill has now considered our bets as two 50-pound bets and said he's ready to pay each of us £1,700. I'm not going to be happy with that. I'm going to take it all the way. William Hill's chief executive has refused to talk to me."

"I went back to the point where I bet, and the person who wrote it for me said 'I guess I slept half' when I did it."

William Hill defended himself by saying: "This bet was made due to human error and has been modified that way. Before the start of the season, there were no double offers. Unfortunately, we have realized this is disappointing for our customers and we have no choice but to apologize."
