When you are cooking the equipment you use has a massive effect on the resulting taste of the food. Obviously everyone wants the best tasting food possible within their budget. So a good way you can make sure your food tastes it's best is to be using the best equipment for the job. This article specifically discusses Teflon pans versus stainless steel. There are more considerations however than just which cooks better. Buyers need to take into consideration how easy pans are to clean, their expected lifespan and of course purchase cost.
Which cooks food better?
Well due to its non stick coating Teflon pans need less oil to cook for and stop food sticking to the pan. This is an advantage for those who are health conscious and watching their weight. On the other hand it can be said that whilst stainless steel pans may require more oil they also achieve better browning of meat. Teflon seems to give meat a more through cooked application of heat rather than a more raw heat which you get off the stainless steel.
Which cleans easier?
Teflon definitely wins hands down in this comparison as its non stick coating means food is much easier to clean of its surface. Steel pans need a bit more washing liquid and a bit more effort to get off burned in or excess food.
Which will last longer?
Stainless steel pans will last longer as the Teflon coating can be expected to last around 1-2 years. There is also the added advantage of stainless steel that you can be much less careful about scratching the surface of the inside of the pan. With Teflon you can only use wooden or plastic utensils and accessories as any scratch to the coating is really damaging and irreversible. Once the coating is scratched sometimes the Teflon will start flaking into your food, which can't be too good for you.
What's the cost?
Well as you have probably guessed Teflon pans are cheaper and stainless steel pans more expensive. What one you choose really depends on your immediate budget, cooking preferences and ability to care for kitchen equipment.
Anything else?
When heated at high temperatures Teflon can become toxic. It does take a large deal of sustained heat but this is a minor consideration to consider. On the other hand stainless steel pots and pans are usually safe for high heat and use in ovens.
Bonus tip:
We really recommend keeping your pans in order with an in drawer/cupboard rack or insert to keep pans easily accessible and separated. This will stop damage from pans rubbing and colliding and really extend the life of use (especially in Teflon coated pans). You can also get a wall rack with hooks on it to hang your pots and pans above the stove so they are within easy reach when you need to cook.
