The casino cluster is being expanded to counter Incheon Japan

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority aims to expand the "cluster" of resorts, including casino facilities, which in itself can act as an international tourist attraction and respond to the upcoming competitive threat of the Japanese casino market. One Korean official who did so told GGRAsia in an interview. The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority wants to attract two to three more plans, adding four that are already in operation and are currently in operation.

In Macau and the U.S. state of Nevada, the Las Vegas Stripes is already offering one-stop destinations for casino entertainment. Japan has decided on a different course for the first step in market liberalization, despite a consulting firm advocating for the "Osaka Stripes" of gaming properties in the Japanese city. Japan prefers to spread up to three resorts across the country.

"Our strategy for responding to Japan's competitive challenges is to provide 'more diverse experiences and concepts' through 'IR clusters' in IFEZ," Nicholas Kim (pictured) said, referring to the term 'IR' or 'integrated resorts' used across the country and regions to describe large-scale casino complexes with facilities such as conference spaces, hotels, shops, and entertainment stadiums.

On the sidelines of the G2E (Global Gaming Expo) Asia @ Philippine Casino Trade Exhibition and Conference in Manila last week, IFEZ's official project manager and service industry department spoke with us.

IFEZ's efforts are focused on Yeongjongdo Island, home to Korea's main aviation hub in Incheon.

Korea already has a casino industry, but out of the 17 existing stadiums, only one Kangwon Land can accommodate domestic players. Casino in the IFEZ resort is also for foreign players.
