Olson leads MLB with 42 homers Ohtani's homerun drought extends to eight games

Matt Olson leads all major leaguers in home runs.

Matt Olson (Atlanta Braves) has passed Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels) to become Major League Baseball's (MLB) all-time home run leader in 2023.

Olson, batting fourth in the lineup, went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets at Citi Field in New York City on Wednesday (Aug. 13).

Olson hit a three-run homer over the center field fence with runners on first and second in the top of the sixth inning for a 5-0 lead and followed it up with a solo shot to left in the top of the eighth.

Olson, who hit his 40th home run of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Nov. 11 to tie Ohtani for first place, followed with his 41st and 42nd homers of the day to take sole possession of the lead.

Shohei Otani

Ohtani went 1-for-4 in a visiting game against the Houston Astros. In the sixth inning, he hit a fastball that traveled about 190 miles per hour (118.3 kilometers per hour), but the ball hit the top of the right-center field fence.

It was the second-fastest hit in the majors in 2023, behind Olson's 118.6 mph (191 km/h).

However, instead of a home run, Ohtani's hit was a double.

Ohtani hadn't hit a home run in eight games since his 40th homer against the Seattle Mariners on April 4.

Despite losing the major league home run lead to Olson, Ohtani still leads the American League (AL). Second in AL home runs is Luis Robert Jr. (Chicago White Sox) with 31.

Major League Baseball recognizes individual awards in the AL and National League (NL).
