Macau Ferry Service Hit By Crash

Late on Wednesday, ferries between Macau and Hong Kong were suspended after a TurboJET-operated high-speed Pearl Delta shuttle collided with a mainland registered vessel near Chang Chau Island.

According to the French news agency, 38 people were injured in the accident. The Universal MK 2013 (file photo), run by the Suntak-China Travel Ship Management Company, reportedly had 160 people on board. The company is a subsidiary of Suntak Holdings Ltd., managed by Panzi Ho Chiu King. Mr. Ho, who gave the keynote speech at this year's Global Game Expo (G2E) Asia 2014, which closes today, is also a small investor in Macao Casino Conservation Company MGM China Holdings Ltd.

"The Macau ferry collided with a ship from the mainland. Thirty-eight passengers on the Macau ferry were taken to Zhangjiou Hospital with minor injuries," a Hong Kong government spokesman told AFP.

It is the second major collision involving a TurboJET vessel in six months. In late November last year, at least 85 people were injured when one of the company's ferries hit an "unidentified object" in the sea near a remote island in Hong Kong, one of the most congested waterways in the world.

In December 2012, another Hong Kong-bound TurboJet passenger ship, the Urzelah, collided with a marker buoy in the waters of a ferry terminal outside Macau, injuring 26 people, including four Macau residents. The incident prompted a Macau legislator to require maritime passenger services operating in Hong Kong to wear seat belts.
