Genji's youngest Wondil 'Phase' becomes a Royal Loader

Zenith's rookie ranged dealer 'Phase' becomes LCK Royal Loader.

Kim "Phase" Soo-hwan won the 2023 LoL Champions Korea (LCK) Spring Finals at the Seoul Sports Complex Indoor Gymnasium in Jamsil on September 9, earning the title of Royal Loader. The feat came just 82 days after his debut.

The day before, 'Phase' had secured a spot in the MSI just 81 days after his debut by taking down KT Rolster in the Grand Finals, capping off an epic debut season by being crowned Royal Loader the very next day. It's been three years since Kim "Kanna" Chang-dong (then T1) was crowned the Royal Roadrunners rookie of the year in the 2020 LCK Spring.

'Phase' put on a tremendous performance throughout the playoffs, making it hard to believe he was new to everything. More than just winning and losing, he didn't seem intimidated at all against some of the best ranged dealers in the game, including Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu, Park "Viper" Do-hyun, Kim "Aiming" Haram and Lee "Kuma-yushi" Min-hyung, but rather rose to the top by out-carrying them.

Notably, in the finals, he defeated one of the biggest challenges of the spring, Kumayushi. In the first and second games, they overcame Kumayushi's firepower with Jaya and Apellios, and in the final four games, their steady but aggressive damage dealing helped them pull off the upset.

As Genji had to deal with the loss of franchise star Park "Ruler" Jae-hyuk, it's no surprise that "Phase" quickly adapted to the first team stage and top-tier competition. Furthermore, 'Phase' is said to have the lowest total annual salary in the LCK. 'Phase' is the ultimate in 'bang for the buck'. The Rookie of the Year award is a no-brainer.
