'Declaration of entering ML' Ko Woo-seok finally opens his mouth "If I hadn't won..."

LG closer Ko Woo-seok (25), who is challenging for the American stage, spoke his mind.

He joined LG fans at the LG Twins' 2023 Love Giving Festival with Championship event at Kyung Hee University's Peace Hall in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, on Feb. 2.

Ko has now announced his intention to challenge the major leagues through the posting system (closed competitive bidding). The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced on March 28 that it had "requested the MLB (Major League Baseball) office to post Go Woo-seok to 30 major league clubs at LG's request."

Speaking to reporters before the event, Koo said, "It's something I've been talking about with Cha Myung-seok since we negotiated my salary this year. He told me that if I won the regular season and then won the Korean Series, he would consider my application for the post, even if I didn't necessarily go. It was something we talked about," he said.

"But I don't think applying for the post will change anything. It doesn't make a difference," he said, adding, "I think the biggest factor is your age. There is no guarantee that it will work out. If I come back, I can still stay with the LG Twins, and I think that was a big part of my decision. I can also apply for free agency next year and try it. It's something I can do through this year's post, so I think it's best to go with the flow in that regard."

Go Woo-seok actually played this season with the team's championship in mind more than anyone else. So, while the idea of going to the U.S. was in the back of his mind, he didn't feel comfortable saying it out loud, so many people didn't know about his dream of making it to the major leagues. "I didn't think about it (going to the major leagues) very specifically. He said he'd post it if I won, so there's no guarantee that it would work out. I just thought, 'If I win, I can apply for a post,'" he explains.

"Even if it's not necessarily a post, I'm in a position where I want to win again next year so I can try to win back-to-back titles," he said, adding, "I didn't think I had to win for the post. I always wanted to win, but the conditions themselves were good. I feel like if I hadn't won, I wouldn't have wanted to apply for the post."

Go Woo-seok plans to travel to the U.S. if a major league team expresses interest in signing him. With Lee and Ricoh Sports CEO Lee Yerang traveling to the United States to participate in the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings, much attention will continue to be paid to Go Woo-seok's future. When asked about the amount of money or treatment he received, he laughed and said, "I think they do a good job," and then added, "We have an agency in the US. They've been in touch since the middle of the season. To be honest, I didn't think too much about it (going to the US) until then because the team was fighting for positions. They even traveled from the US to meet with me. There's a part of me that liked that. I'm grateful that my agency did a good job meeting and preparing me. I don't think about big contracts. I don't think I'm that kind of player. Honestly, I'm just curious to see what they think of me," he said humbly.

When asked how many years he would like to play in the major leagues if he were to make it, Go said, "I don't think I've thought about that much," but added, "Personally, I'd like to stay as long as I can speak English well. I remember a player who went to Japan in the past saying, 'I want to come back to Korea and show you how I play when I have the strength. I haven't advanced yet, so I'm not at that level, and it's too early to talk about that, but I hope I can master English. I don't really know. I don't know, because playing baseball doesn't change. I think it will be realized when I get a real contract. That's where I'm at right now," he said.
