The irrelevant defensive king is 'frustrated' because he was not nominated
Los Angeles Lakers big man Anthony Davis (31) is frustrated again. This time, he raised his voice when he was excluded from the list of candidates.
On the 22nd, the NBA Secretariat announced candidates for individual awards in seven categories, including season MVP and rookie of the year.
Davis, who has been considered one of the best defenders in the league since joining the NBA in 2012, has not been nominated for the defense award this season. Rudy Govere of Minnesota, Victor Wembanyama of San Antonio and Snake Adebayo of Miami have been nominated for the award.
Davis has become the top defensive player with no wins for the 12th season. "I will never get the award. They don't give it to me. The league doesn't like me." Davis said in an interview with ESPN on Sunday. "I can switch from No. 1 (point guard) to No. 5 (center). I can play the best pick and roll in the league. I don't know what else to do. It's over. I will do what I do to win and challenge for the champion. That's all for me personally," Davis said.
A graduate of the University of Kentucky, Davis joined New Orleans as the No. 1 pick in 2012. Up until he joined the NBA, he was praised for his defensive skills, although his offensive talent was somewhat less refined. In the final of the 2012 NCAA Championship, he recorded a whopping 16 rebounds, six blocks, and three steals, making a tremendous contribution to his defense.
His defense capability remained unchanged for 12 seasons. He was named the block king three times and also the All-Defensive Team four times. This season, he played a career-high 76 games in a season, averaging 2.3 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. In offense, he scored a career-high 12.6 rebounds. He was selected as a member of the U.S. Dream Team in recognition of his stellar performance in this season, and will also participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"I can block shots, help on the weak side, switch to anyone, pick-and-roll, guard, go back under the basket and defend," Davis said. "Defensively, I can do anything. That's my ability."
Kobe, Adebayo, and Wembanyama, who have been nominated as best defense players this season, are also second to Davis in many indicators. Davis' grudges and frustrations, despite having been recognized for his defense capability for 12 years, have not been nominated.
