Holland's multi-goal performance sees City beat Young Boys 3-0 to book place in UCL last 16

Barcelona suffer 0-1 shock loss to Shakhtar

Manchester City (England) booked an early place in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 after a multi-goal victory over Young Boys (Switzerland), led by Elling Holland.

City defeated Young Boys 3-0 at home in the fourth leg of their UCL Group G match of the 2023-2024 season at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England on Monday (Aug. 8).

With four unbeaten group games, City have 12 points, extending their lead over third-placed Zvezda (Serbia) to 11 points and securing at least second place in the group, regardless of the outcome of their remaining two matches, to advance to the Round of 16.

The 'defending champions' were looking for a second straight title.

The solution was Holland. Holland, who led the UCL with 12 goals last season, scored his fourth goal of the tournament to move into a tie for second place in the scoring charts.

He is one goal behind top scorer Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid - five).

It was his second consecutive multi-goal game in the UCL this season. It is his first since joining City.

Holland opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, converting a penalty kick from Matheus Nunes.

After Phil Foden made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time, City sealed the 3-0 victory six minutes into the second half when Holland netted his third goal of the tournament.

In Group H, FC Barcelona (Spain) dropped their fourth match against Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), 0-1.

The match was played in Hamburg, Germany, a third country due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Barcelona started their main attackers, including Lewandowski and Hapinha, but were unable to break through the Shakhtar defense.

Despite the loss, Barcelona remained in first place in the group (9 points). They have the same number of points as second-place FC Porto (Portugal - 9), but have a superior goal difference.

With Barcelona's win, Shakhtar moved into third place in the group (6 points) and kept their Round of 16 hopes alive.
