Otani reveals dog's identity, Japanese archipelago 'bam'...why?
Shohei Ohtani is a Los Angeles Dodger. But his dog is not a Dodger.
Ohtani's dog's identity has finally been revealed.
The Los Angeles Dodgers officially announced the signing of Ohtani, who was worth $700 million, on Friday. During his introductory press conference, Ohtani addressed the questions that have been swirling around his dog.
Otani's dog first appeared in public during a video interview with MLB Network last month after he won the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Many people were intrigued by the cute little dog as it crawled into the lap of the interviewer.
Later, the dog's name was rumored to hold a hint about Ohtani's next destination. There was a lot of speculation about the dog's name.
When asked about the dog's name, Otani replied, "Decoping. It's a Japanese name. Decoping (でこぴん) refers to the game of "kakbam," which involves hitting an opponent in the forehead with the index or middle finger hooked around the thumb and bouncing.
When the dog's name was revealed, only Japanese people familiar with the word "decoping" cracked up. It quickly became the number one trending topic on X (formerly Twitter).
Many Japanese media outlets devoted significant space to the story of Otani's dog's name.
Otani explained that he thought Americans would have a hard time pronouncing it, so he introduced the dog in the U.S. by its original name, Decoy.
Decoy means "bait" or "windcatcher," among other things. It's a fitting name, given that Ohtani's future has been shrouded in mystery for the past month, especially when you consider that he was strongly rumored to have agreed to join the Toronto Blue Jays shortly before the Los Angeles Dodgers were announced.
After the puppy's name (Decoping) was revealed, some quick-thinking baseball fans found a video of Ohtani slapping a teammate on the forehead in the Angels dugout and posted it on social media.
With one of the biggest stars in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers may start performing the ceremony next season.
