Universal Values

Emotional, logical, and other similar values are not universal, they're simply human appeals.

Essential Value

This is the innate essence of living and non-living things. It is not within nor without, it is beyond existence and non-existence. This value is only concerned about the "is-ness" of an entity or non-entity as part of the ultimate reality, the One Mind of the universe. It is through this value that everything is said to be equally important and unimportant, such that a grain of sand is just as important as an entire galaxy.

Whether you exist or not, you are important. Whether you can choose or not, you are important. This is the core meaning of essential value. From it, one can see that everything in the universe is enough as they are, cannot be increased nor decreased in any way. Even if you're an animal or a tiny rock who only exist in someone's imagination, you still hold an important irreplaceable role in the grand scheme of things. Even if you ceased existing or if you were not born in the first place, you are still just as important.

This essence we have is the same essence we share with everything in the universe, thus it cannot be stolen or taken away by anything, not even by non-existence. Regardless of one's purpose or non-purpose, everything, every single atom, individual, or group, are an essential irreplaceable part of ultimate reality we live in.

Will Value

This is the value of decision making, the value of making your own decisions and choices. People want to make their own choices, even if they know that their choice is wrong. It's because Will Value is many levels above Moral Value. After all, what's the point of being good, if you didn't choose to be good? Moral value is only possible because it's done by conscious choice.

Likewise, there are many people in history who preferred to die than to be forced into doing things they don't want to do. Indeed, Will Value is above Existential Value. After all, what's the point of living a long life of slavery where you're unable to decide anything for yourself? As a kid, I used to think that a long life of suffering is better than a short and happy life. Now that I'm adult, I think otherwise. Death, for me, is the purest form of freedom, the direct path of ascension beyond the material existence.

Still, life is worth living because we can choose. We can't die yet, for we do not know if we will be able to choose after death. Because we can choose in this life, there's always potential for change and growth. It's alright if death arrives at any point in time but to choose death when we can still make choices, is like wasting free opportunities to spin the wheel of life.

Sisyphus can be happy if he can still make a choice, regardless how limited his choices are.

Existential Value

Those who exist can do things that only those who exist can do, such as being born, living, growing, withering, and dying. The merit gained by the simple act of existing is called "Existential Value". When people talk about existential value, they're usually talking about Purpose and Meaning, both of which are more closely associated with Practical value.

One doesn't need to have any meaning or purpose in life to prove that they're somewhat important. Their existence alone is enough proof. This includes objects and non-living things, they may have arbitrary economic value but their existence alone is important in itself, regardless whether they have any potential, purpose, moral alignment, or beauty.

However, this also means that all existential value would disappear in the face of death. If you are dead, then regardless of what you have done and what you had, you already ceased to exist. You have no more existential value, though you may still provide potential, practical, and aesthetic value to others through your past works and their memories with you.

So it gets a little suspicious when someone tells you "you're important as long as you're alive".

Potential Value

A tiny seed may not seem like a lot, yet it has the ability to grow into a giant tree given enough time and resources. This capacity for growth and learning is called Potential Value. This is why even the little things, small babies, and tiny seeds can be so important to people when they don't have any current practical, moral, or aesthetic value. The profits they bring in the future far outweighs their lack of practical value in the present.

Those who can see this value tend to be more hopeful and optimistic towards the future, especially when they have experienced situations where the difficulty is so extreme that it can only be endured by those who believe in their great potential value. Indeed, everything has potential for growth, as well as decay.

Still, there is great danger in clinging to this value and ignoring the rest. It's like when a time-traveler saw their great future, so when they returned to their original timeline, they become lazy and stagnant since they know that they're going to be successful in the end anyway. However, this change in attitude would definitely either change his future or the context of his future. He would be better off not seeing his future in the first place.

Practical Value

Ah yes, the most favorite value of western society, the one most closely associated with wealth - Practical value. It is how much something or someone changes your life for the better. Objects such as common household appliances, kitchen utensils, and clothes have great practical value. Activities that boost one's health and motivation are rich in this value as well.

The greatest symbol of this value is money, so much that practical value is almost the same as monetary value. After all, they say that money can buy everything, change a person's environment, and meet all their survival needs without any worries. Thus, we can say that money has the greatest practical value in the world.

Being wealthy doesn't mean much without any potential value. If one's money isn't growing, then it is decreasing. Likewise, this same rule applies to everything in life with practical value but no potential value — when something or someone stops growing, it begins to deteriorate. Still, disposable tissues and diapers are still important.

Moral Value

They say it is the dignity or integrity of something, the basis by which one can be respected. One's moral alignment, the goodness or badness of something, this is called Moral Value. It's not necessarily about doing the right things as much as doing the good things. Objects can have moral value as well, but only if they are used for the specific manner they are intended to be used.

This value can be highly subjective and different for every person. Regardless whether one has the same or different definition of morality, their views and attitudes towards it will always be different. Just because two people believe in the same thing does not mean they will do it in the same way. After all, there are a lot of hidden differences that even one isn't aware of, even if they're aware, they won't be able to find the words to explain it.

Perhaps moral value isn't about whether one is good or bad but simply the manner in which they do things, their way of life, and the general theme of their intentions. It's not about the brightness or darkness of their soul but the color of their soul. We may classify these colors in primary and secondary colors, yet the color of each soul is uniquely different. Some a little darker, some a little brighter, and others grayish. Whatever it is, we must learn to appreciate the differences in inner color of every person.

Aesthetic Value

If moral value is like the inner color of a person, object, or activity, then aesthetic value is their outer color, best known in the word "appearance". It is how someone or something looks from the outside, wherein they are naturally judged by society and the senses. One's appearance may be used to hide, express, or complement their inner color or moral value. This value is best utilized for connecting with the world of appearances and expressing oneself.

Although it's the lowest value of all, it is one of the priorities of society — art is something that cannot be neglected. Beauty is also a human need. There are things that appear beautiful, thus they are appreciated. There are things that don't appear beautiful yet, thus they are appreciated so they may become beautiful.

Since this value is the lowest, it's not uncommon for it to be neglected. There's barely any negative consequences for doing so. Yet when this value is used to express the light and beauty of the higher values, it becomes wonderfully sublime and spectacular. That is where it can truly shine.

"Never forget — you are important."

"As important as a single grain of sand, as important as an imaginary character, as important as the ten thousand galaxies above."

"There's nothing wrong with being dark, if that is your true inner color."
