Supporting 'tweezers' during team training ban: a trick or a treat?

Five Kia Tigers pitchers Lee Yi-ri, Yoon Young-chul, Jung Hae-young, Hwang Dong-ha, and Kwak Do-kyu, as well as pitching coaches Jung Jae-hoon and Lee Dong-gul, were 'dispatched' to the Driveline Baseball Center in Seattle, USA. They left for the U.S. on Jan. 18 and will return on Jan. 20 after celebrating the New Year in the United States. It is a schedule of 33 days and 34 nights to accompany the power analysts during the inactive period (December and January).

"The coaches do not help the players with their training. They will learn coaching programs such as bio-mechanics (movements adapted to body features) separately." The Korea Baseball Players' Association (KPA) said, "We have no choice but to believe that the training system for coaches and players is different." They perceive it as individualized training. However, if the club pays for players and coaches to stay in the U.S., can it be called individual training during the inactive period? "I originally planned to go to Driveline at my own expense, but the club supported me, so I had the opportunity to go with my teammates," Lee said in an interview with 'Sports Donga' before leaving for the U.S.. In effect, the club is providing "tweezers" to help the team's prospects train during their inactivity.

Prior to Kia, the Lotte Giants also sent four of their players, including Yoon Sung-bin and Lee Seung-heon, to the Driveline before the 2020 season. (Both Lotte and Kia used the word "dispatch.") The NC Dinos also sent Seo Eui-tae, Lee Yong-joon, Shin Young-woo, and coaches Lee Yong-hoon and Kim Gun-tae to the Driveline camp in Tokyo, Japan, from November 25 to December 1. However, this was not a period of inactivity. Driveline is known for improving pitchers' overall performance, including increasing their velocity.

The players' association says that "only rookies and military veterans were allowed to participate in the Australian League," but it wasn't just rookies who participated, it was also some players that the clubs felt needed development. Of course, not everyone was able to participate in the A-League.

Since 2017, the players' association has demanded that clubs strictly adhere to inactivity periods. They wanted to guarantee players the right to rest and autonomy in December and January, when salaries are not paid. During those two months, the players' association banned the presence of players and coaches at home stadiums. As a result, personal training during the inactivity period has become increasingly a "boom or bust" situation. While highly paid first-team players traveled to warmer climes abroad at their own expense with close juniors, lower-salaried players were forced to stay home and train privately. Some players were reportedly paid by their clubs to pay for their training.

In this atmosphere, the Australian League or sending a driveline might be another perk. This is because it is a kind of trick to develop prospective tweezers. A club manager said, "I had doubts about the Australian League from the beginning. I think we should talk to the players' association about the issue." Jang Dong-cheol, secretary general of the Korean Baseball Players' Association, also said, "At a time when there are issues such as lack of training volume, clubs are moving in the direction of training only the players they need, but we need to take a closer look at the issue and have an in-depth discussion."
