AmRRON T-REX 2019: My Experience

As I mentioned in my post AmRRON: What's it all about? - PART ONE

I am still trying to understand the whole AmRRON concept and how to get involved, but this weekend is their "Big Event" of the year so I'm really trying to get feel for the scope of the group by monitoring chatter on their posted freqs during Skeds and in between.

Monitoring 7110 for JS8Call & occasionally switching to 7242 SSB to listen.

072619 / 1730 PST
Nothing Heard

072619 / 1930 PST
7110 JS8Call - Discovered I was on LSB... duh!

Monitoring through the night provided some insight but did not stay up for 2200 Pacific Net and caught nothing on Contestia 4/250 for it. I believe I was on LSB instead of USB at that time also. :-(

THIS IS THE AMRRON TREX2019 TRAINING NET.
TREX2019 IS A NATIONAl PREPAREDNESS TRAINInG EXERCISE.
MY CALL IS KM4PHT/S LOCATED IN CSRA SIGCEN AND I
WILL BE NCS FOR THIS SEGMENT OF THE NET.

THIS IS A DIRECTED NET WITH ALL TRAFFIC PASS NCS.
ALL STATIONS REMAIN ON FREQUENCY UNTIL THE NET IS
RELEASED BY NCS.

PORTIONS OF THIS NET WILL CONTAIN SIMULATED TRAFFIC,
THIS IS NOT A "REAL WORLD" EXERCISE

TRAFFIC WILL BE PRECEDED BY "EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE".
THE CURRENT AMCON LEVEL IS 1.

ALL STATIONS PLS TURN OFF YOUR TXID UNLESS YOU ARE PASSING
MESSAGE TRAFFIC.

DE KM4PHT/S

IN A REAL WORLD EVENT THE OR ASSIGNING AN ASSISTANT NET
CONTROL WOULD BE IMPORTANT.

PRIORITY TRAFFIC RECEIVED MAY TAKE THE NORMAL NCS OUT AT A
MOMENTS NOTICE.

ANCS WOULD TAKE OVER IN ANY EVENT NCS WAS UNABLE TO
CONTINUE

WOULD ALSO ACT AS FIRST RELAY IN THE PASSING OF MESSAGES SO
CHOOSING ONE THAT IS NOT IN MY GENERAL AREA OR AN OPERATOR
WITH A STRONGER STATION WOULD BE HELPFUL

ARE THERE ANY STATIONS WILLING TO ACT AS ANCS FOR THIS NET?

ARE THERE ANY STATIONS REAL WORLD EMERGENCY OR PRIORITY
TRAFFIC?

Looks like the messages were sent via MFSK32 instead of Conestia 4/250 for speed purposes and so they could use a custom form in FLDigi.

While convenient for the sender, I had to open another FLDigi window set to decode to MSK32 and barely caught the transmission. In the future I will know better.

Usually you send the traffic on the same freq/mode, isn't that the purpose of a Net, so everyone can get the news?

CQ CQ AMRRON IS ANYONE COPYING NCS FOR CENTRAL NET?

1930 NATIONAL NET

JS8Call flawless when Contestia 4/250 fails?

Both images above are from the exact time and while traffic was being passed on the net. Contestia 4/250 is gibberish!

I asked KC0BOW on JS8Call if he was hearing the National Net, and he said yes "on FLDigi".

Then I saw the rookie mistake... even though my radio was on USB, FLDigi has to have it set to this also to decode and it was on LSB.

I did not have time to figure out how to run JS8Call and FLDigi using FLrig before T-REX, so I was letting JS8Call control the radio and manually matching the freq in FLDigi for screen shots, found out the hard way the MODE toggle matters on the decode. doh!

Below is a map of who was on JSCall (at least that I could hear) at the time the National Net was going on via Contestia 4/250 on 7.110 USB.

I'm sure the numbers were much larger on Contestia as JS8Call is still new.

CONCLUSIONS

K7JLJ Monitoring

  • 7110 for JS8Call CONTACT
  • 7242 for SSB
  • 146.420 FM
  • 151.490 MUR 3
  • 462.6125 FRS 3
  • AmRRON Zello Channel CONTACT

I was impressed with the number of digital operations and ability to pass traffic on HF but there was no local presence in Oregon that I could detect and other's on Zello App noted that the local non-HAM channel participation was almost non-existent.

There are a significant number of HAMs involved with AmRRON obviously going off the JS8Call reporting alone, which again is likely a much smaller sample of digital AmRRON operators than FLDigi guys.

I look forward to reading the AAR in the next few weeks, hopefully with some real numbers.

I did see a blurb on the Zello App that there were over 60 messages passed up the line to the National Comms Center over the weekend.

I will be using this annual event to check my own offgridcomms in the future and hopefully by next year will be more digital savvy.

Actually getting online and talking to others via digital has me excited about becoming proficient with JS8Call and FLDigi.

As for AmRRON as an organization... The jury is still out.

Best part of exercise?

Got me on the air and the next day I was having my first ragchew ever with WA6QGH on JS8Call! The "mike shyness" is gone on digital.
