My name is Jef and my location is in JO11RC
All my antennas are on the balcony:
Diamond V2000 vertical tribander on short mast in a solar umbrella feet,
5 element LPDA from WIMO (Germany) for 2m & 70cm on a tripod, can be used in vertical or horizontal polarisation,
dipole for 2m & 70cm from WIMO (Germany) on the same tripod can be used vertical or horizontal polarisation, replacing the 5 element LPDA in windy conditions...
Different AMPRO hamsticks for different bands using the railing as a counterpoise, for HF.

Although i'm also active on HF, those reports are mainly VHF, UHF & SHF.

Wanted to start digital modes (FT8, FT4, JS8call, RTTY, SSTV, WINLINK...) on VHF & up (and HF!)
Wanted to learn how to connect your PC to your transceiver, and what settings you need?
The YOUTUBE videos from KW3KW - Ham radio made simple - can be found here:

ARISS Moves Series 30 SSTV Transmissions to RS-38S After Equipment Issue
the Series 30 Slow-Scan Television retransmission event, which will take place using the RS-38S satellite rather than the ISS. Transmissions are scheduled to begin on 5 December at 00:01 UTC (4 December at 7:01 PM ET) and continue through 13 December at 23:59 UTC. The images will be broadcast from RS-38S, also known as VIZARD-meteo and listed under NORAD 57189, on a downlink of 437.825 MHz with normal Doppler adjustments. Each image will be sent in Robot 36 mode for approximately 36 seconds, followed by a silence period of two to three minutes. Operators may upload their received images to the ARISS SSTV gallery to obtain a new Series 30-1 certificate tailored for the RS-38S event.
The satellite-based activity follows a series of technical difficulties that prevented completion of the original Series 30 event aboard the International Space Station. The ISS transmissions began on 12 November with approximately two hours of successful downlink activity, during which several stations worldwide decoded and uploaded clean images. Soon afterward, SSTV activity on 145.800 MHz FM abruptly stopped.
Restoration of SSTV service from the ISS will depend on the results of continued hardware assessments. Until those evaluations are complete, ISS-based SSTV remains offline, and the RS-38S retransmission provides the primary means for operators to receive the full Series 30 imagery.

UMKA-1 (RS40S) CubeSat December 29, 2025
AMSAT-Francophone has posted information about an SSTV event sponsored by Space-π. The event will transmit SSTV images from the UMKA-1 (RS40S) CubeSat and run December 28th through the later portion of January. Transmitted images will include children's drawings with additional imagery to follow early in January.
Those looking to receive images can point their antennas at the UMKA-1 (RS40S) CubeSat and tune their receivers to 437.625 MHz (+/- 10khz for doppler shift). SSTV images are expected to be transmitted in the Robot 36 format.

Things I tried or done this month:

I tested a lot with FreeDV RADE on HF (see last month for more info). But I also did some tests with ON4LX on 2 meters (vertical antenna on ground level) and ON4PN on 70cm (mobile antenne on balcony) , and we could all put the power down to less than 1 Watt, and still have armchair copy with excellent audio...
ON4LX even made some QSO's on the QO-100 with 1W and a 1 meter dish inside his living room at ground level...
Looking forward to some more FreeDV RADE testing on VHF and up...

I also received SSTV pictures from RS38S and ARCTICSAT-1 this month (see further in the December 25 report).

The (Android, probably also IOS) App MeshCore does not require a MeshCore node being connected. Without a node you can still reach the menu "..." and then under "tools" you find the menus "antenna coverage" and "line of sight". The usage is very intuitive and I found out, that you can change the height of the antenna (important for antennas on houses or towers) and even the frequency (default is probably 868 Mhz).

New Packet Radio (NPR)
n 2019, Guillaume F4HDK unveiled his New Packet Radio (NPR) system (Reference 1, Reference 2). F4HDK developed NPR as a “clean sheet of paper” design and despite including “Packet Radio” it had no backwards compatibility with legacy Amateur Radio Packet Radio, other than “packets” were used, over “radio”. No AX.25, no narrow bandwidths, no TNCs, no legacy FM (or other) radios, etc. NPR used TCP/IP, Ethernet as a radio interface, reasonable data speeds (100 kbps - 1 Mbps), on the 420-450 MHz / 70cm band. NPR even had a built-in networking capability for making efficient use of high profile nodes.

But the biggest innovation of New Packet Radio that F4HDK used was that he released NPR as open source, hardware, software, and well-designed protocol. His good designs that could be replicated, and then improved upon, the growing need for such a higher speed data radio for use on VHF / UHF, and his decision to use the open source model, has now resulted, in 2025, of a version of NPR for the 2m band (currently, 146-148 MHz). That one radio could conceivably be the “magic bullet” that helps recreate Amateur Radio data networks suitable for use (and NewTechHams) of the 21st century.

FreeDV RADE
I have been playing with RADE in digital voice on HF, and been amazed...
https://freedv.org/
On FreeDV reporter (= the dashboard of where you find activity) I discovered that some people are testing RADE on 144.280Mhz and on the QO-100:
https://qso.freedv.org/
The RADE-audio on HF is like listening to a 2 meter FM signal: no noise, qrm, fading... And it still decoded at -4 -5 db...
See also 2 interesting articles in the December 2025 issue of 'Practical Wireless' by Eric GW8LJJ "Digital voice for HF" (page22) and Daimon G4USI "The RADE QRP transceiver" (page 38).

In my local club TLS-ARCDP we have now a D-star repeater (ON0TLS) and the club decided to organise a information meeting on D-star (by Patrick ON4PN), attended by +40 hams of which 25% was less than 30 years, including some XYL's... It is decided to organise different workshops, for different TRX models, to learn how to configure, program, set-up and operate D-star. An excellent idea!

Exponentially Improving Radio Technology in Ukraine

I have no idea what video I watched on YouTube. Mostly the video explained the circuitous route a group of Ukraine drones had taken to attack a target deep inside Russia. As background, the video explained how advanced and robust Ukraine’s drone communications systems had become to overcome Russia’s communications jamming capabilities. Ukraine is now using very advanced, very capable frequency hopping technology to sidestep aggressive, powerful broad spectrum jamming by Russia. Ukraine drones are able to switch modes, frequencies, and interleave video, telemetry, and coordination with the other drones in the group.

What I found most remarkable is that the communications packages on the latest Ukraine drones are developed by Ukraine, and the drone radio hardware is low-cost, mostly off the shelf (Ukraine customizes the firmware), lightweight, and power efficient. Some of the Ukraine drone radios are optimized for specific roles. Some drones were designated to be “video observers” and loiter while the attack drones, well, attack. Other Ukraine drones are communications relays at that loiter at designated intermediate points - essentially acting as repeaters that miles-high. Other Ukraine drone roles include more sophisticated Global Navigation Satellite Systems receivers that have extra hardware to receive GNSS signals despite Russian jamming of GNSS and can then relay reliable GNSS data to the Ukraine attack drones.

Another remarkable radio-related development in Ukraine is the personal two way radio communications units. Instead of cellular with fixed base stations, or use of satellites, Ukraine’s battlefield radio communications is now peer to peer mesh networked as well as encrypted, and can easily interleave data and voice on a single handheld (or belt worn) radio unit.

You can now comminicate in VARA-FM on the VERO VR-N76 (BTECH UV-Pro or Radioddity GA-5WB) HT And this article explains how to do it:

OPEN SPACE An open-source communications hardware & software initiative empowering the public to connect across the world by bouncing signals off the Moon—and more!
Bouncing signals off the Moon—known as Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) communication—has long been the ultimate challenge for radio amateurs. It required large antennas, expensive equipment, and accurate manual pointing and tracking. We try to bring this down to Earth, providing all the tools needed to experience the thrill of space communication, with an open source software-defined phased array.

Things I tried or done this month:

During the ARISS SSTV event 03 -> 09 October 2025), I received 41 SSTV pictures in total of which 20 were pictures of good quality...

On 13 October 2025 I received several SSTV pictures from MB7TV on 144.500 Mhz FM, in JO01mt from the Martello Tower at Point Clear, Essex. MB7TV is a SSTV parrot: it receives the pictures and then retransmits them on the same frequency. It also transmits the 4 last received pictures in one screen at certain times.

I got the RTL-SDR Blog Model V4 working on my 5 years old Android tablet.
This RTL-SDR receives from 500khz to 1.7ghz.
SDR++ Android APK now supports the RTL-SDR Blog V4
https://www.rtl-sdr.com/sdr-android-apk-now-supports-the-rtl-sdr-blog-v4/
You need 2 apps:
SDR driver
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=marto.rtl_tcp_andro
SDR++ Nightly Build (currently 1.2.1)
https://github.com/AlexandreRouma/SDRPlusPlus/releases/tag/nightly
This is really a fun learning process in thinkering with the apps and get the right settings.
The result is amazing for a device at around 40€/£. Could be an excelent present for New Year, or something which could be used with young people in schools during STE(A)M courses or in youthclubs/-groups... or in your local radioclub :)

I will further experiment with the following apps:

Things I tried or done this month:

On the 26th of September I followed a very interesting presentation from Luc ON5SEL on the reception of weather satellites in my local club TLS-ARCDP. That sparked an intrest in the subject, So I got a RTL-SDR Blog Model V4 and a interesting book "Raspberry Pi 5 for Radio Amateurs. Program and Build Raspberry Pi 5 Based Ham Stations Utilities with the RTL-SDR" by Dogan (G7SCU) & Ahmet (2E1GUC) Ibrahim from ELEKTOR.
I want to explore if I can get the RTL-SDR working on my Android phone?

SignalsEverywhere Android Project Updates: Satellite Tracker, HackTV NTSC Transmitter, OBS To HackTV, PacketShare and More
Recently, Sarah Rose Giddings (aka SignalsEverywhere) has been actively developing several radio and SDR based projects for Android.
Sara works with Benshi Protocol Radios (VR-N76 UV-PRO etc)

GridTracker2 User Guide can be found here:
https://docs.gridtracker.org/latest/index.html

The LinHT project, being developed as a project within the larger M17 Project, is some really impressive technological innovation in Amateur Radio. LinHT is really disruptive technology being developed within Amateur Radio that isn’t being attempted anywhere else.
Amateur Radio will finally have the “universal radio” that has been needed for more than a decade since Amateur Radio VHF / UHF began fragmenting into non-interoperable digital voice and data modes.
Amateur Radio and GNU Radio users will finally have a practical, and (probably, soon enough) inexpensive platform to develop and use new types of radio technology, developed in software - write it, run it, use it.
That LinHT is being developed as an Open Source proof of concept will enable commercial manufacturers to create a VHF / UHF Software Defined Radio. There will be ample opportunities to differentiate different vendor’s products - higher power (can’t come soon enough), mobile radio form factor (and higher power), multiple bands, ease of use / better user interfaces, etc.

Things I tried or done this month:

During the ARISS SSTV event, I received 68 SSTV pictures in total of which 23 were pictures of good quality...
If you receive good quality pictures, you are invited to upload decoded images, and you can then apply for awards. There are 4 award that I'm aware of:

Things I tried or done this month:

Airplane scatter
I explored further this fascinating mode for working DX on VHF and up...
First I watched a very interesting Video from John, G3XDY on Youtube from a MMRT event. He covers his approach to working stations via the man-made reflection method of Aircraft Scatter, using Airscout as a means to identify the size and position of suitable air-borne reflectors!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj8ExlzLWJk

Second I learned, from the website of GM3SEK, how to link Airscout and the program wtKST, a clean, simple user interface to the ON4KST online chats – with some extra features for Aircraft Scatter prediction.
https://gm3sek.com/2020/01/31/wtkst-download/
Well, it's a learning process using those applications to make QSO's... I definately need more practice...

Introduction to Radio Astronomy With Bernard, ON4CGX. Explains some of the mysteries and what amateurs can discover for themselves listening to radio waves and the deep space network with simple means that you probably have already (f.e RTL-SDR dongle... free SDR software....).

Decoding SSTV from the UMKA-1 Cubesat
SSTV children's drawings were decoded on 27 & 28th of June. This is much harder than decoding SSTV from the ISS because the TX power is much lower... I had the best results with my 5 element LPDA antenna....

April 2025
---------------

Things I tried or done this month:

HAMCONBE 2025
This conference took place, for the 1st time, on the 26th of april 2025 at the university of louvain (Belgium). The conference was held in English.
HAMCONBE is a forum in Belgium for the exchange of ideas among engineers, scientist, radio amateurs, researchers and students on advances in communication systems, digital signal processing other use of radio technology and beyond.
There were about 120 participants on this conference of which many were Young People (not all students) in there twenties. I talk to some of them and they all had an interest to become a ham, so they came listening what it is all about. I also spoke to a Young engineer in informatics who was interested in hamradio and was already experimenting with LORA boards. There were also about 20 Dutch hams attending the conference.
After every presentation there was a lively Q&A with very good questions. An overview of the talks given can be found at:
https://hamcon.be/
The next (2nd) edition of HAMCONBE will probaly take place on the last Saturday of April 2026 in Louvain (Belgium).

the VGC VR-N76 HT for 2m/70cm with FM only
(Similar model: btech uv-pro and the radioddity GA-5WB)
I got this HT at a special price (125€) from WIMO in Germany and really are amazed of what it can do!
The HT can be used with Bluetooth and works together with a app called "HT" from the Google Playstore (Also available on IOS). No cables needed!!!
The HT can be programmed/configured and used from the smartphone, and after a learningcurve it is very practical to use. Also the menu system on the radio itself is quite logic and you can also program/configure and use the radio without the help of the app.
The HT app has some unique features:
sending and decoding SSTV. I was able to receive SSTV from the ISS...
sending and decoding CW
Using APRS (including the setting for APRS over the ISS)
Using a map for tracking the ISS or other Satelites or both options at the same time
it has a TNC which makes it possible to use WOAD for WINLINK (receiving & sending e-mail over de radio), APRSDROID,...
It has GPS/BDS and a compass
It is waterproof IP-67
2600mAh battery
USB-C charging on the battery itself, and not on the HT!
Good FM (88 - 108Mhz) reception, music sounds really good
AM airband receive
You can use your smartphone to listen or talk on your radio to qso's
...
I replaced the stock rubberduck antenna by a Nagoya NA-701 antenna, because I had the impression that 70cm was a bit deaf, The Nagoya antenne solved the problem.

Joining the SVXlink UK system
http://portal.svxlink.uk:81/
I can already work the Belgain SVXlink reflector , and I prepared another image on a different SDcard with the configuration for the UK system. As you can see on the dashboard from the UK reflector, I can join different (Allstar & digital modes) networks (HUBNET, FREEDOM, EAST-COAST...) with a simple/cheap FM HT on 70cm...
My SVXlink hotspot is from the Belgain firm RF GURU:
https://shop.rf.guru/products/2025-ce-241-u
Both the quality of the hotspot and of the communication is excellent!

01/04/2025 Space Talk: TU Berlin To Radio with Rabea Rogge
On the morning of 1 April 2025, the Amateur Radio Club of Technische Universität Berlin (AFuTUB) successfully conducted a very special radio experiment: a brief conversation with former TU Berlin student Rabea Rogge, who had launched into space just hours earlier, on the night of 31 March to 1 April (CEST), becoming the first German woman in space. The contact was established between TU Berlin’s radio room in the university’s main building in Berlin-Charlottenburg and the SpaceX Dragon capsule in orbit. The radio operators from TU Berlin commented live on the radio experiments and provided insights into their work and the significance of the conversation. This provided viewers with a “behind the scenes” glimpse of their work and allowed them to experience a scientific experiment at first hand.

Things I tried or done this month:

You can decode "radio amateur balloons" with a webbrowser on every smartphone, tablet or PC, independent from the operating system. Nothing to download! Best results are obtained with the Google Chrome browser.
You can use any RX/TRX with SSB in USB mode or a cheap RTL-SDR for about 20€. Also a simple antenna is sufficient...
To see where the ballons are and to track them:
https://sprocketfox.io/xssfox/tags/hab/
The website which decodes the telemetry from the balloon, with map to track the balloon, plots, logs... can be seen here:
https://horus.sondehub.org/
QRG : 437.600 and 434.714 Mhz / RX USB modulation
There are some reports that even 'audio coupling' is working, simply keep your phone/tablet to the speaker of your receiver... so no cables involved here...

On the 21st of March, Patrick ON4PN, gave a presentation (in the UBA-TLS/ARCDP radio club in De Pinte (Belgium)), of a "portable QO100 station, that fits in a rucksack" with a 33cm dish!

M17 Reflector Stream Demo

M17Web: Listen to M17 Reflector Traffic in your Browser - Andreas Schmidberger OE3ANC on the M17 Project website:

Why I built m17web

When introducing my fellow Austrian hams to M17, I kept hearing the same question: “How does it sound?” This coincided with my desire to experiment with Rust and WebAssembly, creating the perfect opportunity to build a tool that would answer this question while expanding my programming skills.

How it works

m17web consists of three main components connecting to mrefd and working together to bring M17 digital voice to your browser. The system listens to UDP traffic from M17 reflectors, routes it through a proxy server, decodes the audio in the browser using WebAssembly, and presents it through a clean web interface—all without requiring any special hardware or software installation.

Can’t get a much lower barrier to entry for some exposure to M17 than this!

Kudos to OE3ANC!

January 2025
--------------------

Things I tried this month:

APRS on the ISS (the International Space Station)
I managed to exchange APRS messages with different stations in Europe using ISS on 145.825 Mhz FM,
Because of the weatherconditions I was using a vertical dipole mounted on a tripod on my balcony, using 10 Watts. I was surprised how easy it was to make contact. On a average pass I could copy between 15 and 20 stations all over Europe. Not all stations were willing to exchange messages, most of them were just broadcasting 'beacon' messages... But some were CQing, and that are the ones to contact. I used the program UISS, from ON6MU, which is more or less plug and play (not pray...). Most settings are already available in this program, so easy to give it a try and good fun!
https://www.qsl.net/on6mu/uiss.htm
See a list of stations worked on PACKET down under ISS & ARISS.

Using WINLINK over APRS on LORA
Thanks to Thierry ON2ACO I have a LORA Igate on 70cm on my balcony and a LORA tracker, which I take with me when I make my daily walk or be mobile with my car. I can check my WINLINK email, and send emails with the help of APRSDROID, which connect to the LORA tracker via Bluetooth. This works very well, but is a little bit slow. So this is something for emergency scenarios....

Rediscovering MULTIPSK
It was a question on our Pennine Ham Whatsapp group from Fraser OZ1JKU, that pointed me to the fact that I have a copy of that program on my PC. As I last used that program in 2020, I updated the program to the latest version, and rediscovered this wonderfull piece of software.
MULTIPSK is the 'Swiss knife' of programs that can decode and transmit in digital modes both on HF and VHF, decoding all kind of exotic modes including f.e. decoding weatherballoons on 403Mhz...
It even decodes the datastreams of DMR, D-star, Fusion... (but no voice...). It also decodes and send, SSTV, RTTY, PSK31, CW.... It comes with 2 other programs: CLOCK which you can use to set the clock of your PC with the help of time signal stations in LF an HF, which can be usable if you don't have access to the internet...
The other program OMMAP can postion stations on a map in certain digital modes.
The user interface is a little overwhelming and there is a steep learning curve, but it is worth the effort! Another excellent tool in my toolbox! It works also on my Linux PC with the help of WINE, which is a Windows emulator.
