Ryu Hyun-jin connects with Mets and Yankees after missing Yamamoto “Veteran with merit”

Toronto Blue Jays Hyun-jin Ryu and his wife, announcer Bae Ji-hyeon, are sitting in the stands and watching the game between KT Wiz and LG Twins in Game 5 of the '2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO Postseason' Korean Series held at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on the 13th.

Ryu Hyun-jin (36), who completed a four-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays of the Major League Baseball (MLB) and acquired free agent (FA) status, was linked with the New York Mets and New York Yankees, who suffered a bitter taste in the battle with Yoshinobu Yamamoto (25, LA Dodgers).

On the 23rd (Korean time), The Athletic noted the change in the Mets' Stove League recruitment policy after failing to recruit Yamamoto and mentioned Ryu Hyun-jin as a candidate for recruiting starting pitcher.

The Athletic asked, “Do you remember Jose Quintana, who the Mets signed last year?” and added, “Hyun-Jin Ryu, Michael Lorenzen, and Mike Clevinger meet the criteria for veteran pitchers who can sign a reasonable two-year contract.” He said.

Quintana (34), who is two years younger than Ryu Hyun-jin, debuted in the major league in 2012 and achieved double-digit wins for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. After last year's season, he signed a two-year, $26 million contract with the Mets.

Quintana missed the entire first half of the year due to a rib injury, but returned in the second half and recorded 3 wins, 6 losses, and an average ERA of 3.57 in 13 games. It is a similar move to Ryu Hyun-jin, who returned last August after 14 months of rehabilitation after undergoing elbow ligament joint surgery and proved that he is healthy with 3 wins, 3 losses, and an ERA of 3.46 in 11 games.

The Athletic said, “If the Mets add a starting pitcher, the depth of the starting lineup (player base) can become thicker. “It is possible to operate the starting rotation more consistently than in the 2023 season,” he explained.

Lorenzen (31) and Clevinger (33), who were mentioned along with Ryu Hyun-jin, are pitchers in their early 30s. Lorenzen, who worked as a starter and a bullpen player, played for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies this year, winning a career-high 9 games in an individual season. Clevinger, a starting pitcher, recorded 9 wins, 9 losses, and an ERA of 3.77 for the Chicago White Sox this year.

MLB.com, the official Major League Baseball website, also listed Ryu Hyun-jin as a candidate to recruit the Mets' starting pitcher.

MLB.com predicted that the Mets, who recruited Luis Severino and Adrian Hauser, are likely to sign short-term contracts with additional starting pitchers. He said, “Free agent starting pitchers (worthy of short-term contracts) include Ryu Hyun-jin, Lorenzen, Sean Munaya, and Frankie Montas.”

Sportsnet New York (SNY) also predicted the Yankees' next move on this day and said Ryu Hyun-jin should be considered as a recruitment candidate.

The media said, “Not every transaction has to be a blockbuster. “There are some unremarkable but good pitchers in the free agent market, such as Ryu Hyun-jin, James Paxton, and Lorenzen,” he explained.

He continued, “Ryu Hyun-jin started only 17 games over the past two seasons due to elbow injuries. “There are risks, but there are also advantages,” he added.
