When does the $50 million renovation cost $340 million?

On Mar. 20, during renovation work, welders working on a kitchen duct accidentally set off flames and spread quickly, completely destroying the Empress Casino doorway. It was announced that the fire started around 10 a.m. and wasn't extinguished until almost 10 p.m. that evening. Firefighters found hotspots throughout the destroyed structure on Saturday as well. Unique structural abnormalities, such as empty spaces and ceilings inside the walls, hindered firefighting efforts thanks to quick responses from firefighters who helped spread the fire. They saved the main casino structure with little damage thanks to a quick response from firefighters who cut off the entrance pavilion from the main building. The pavilion and entrance building had gift shops, restaurants, and offices.

Fire officials estimated the initial damage would be $290 million for reconstruction and $50 million for replacing the building's contents. Insurance estimates could be higher.

Penn National Gaming operates "The Empress," and said it will continue to pay for at least 90 days, as well as provide health benefits for displaced workers. The company encourages employees to volunteer within the community while they wait, and many employees are volunteering while they have the opportunity. The Empress's general manager, Frank Quigley, expresses hope that it can reopen in three months.
