Kim goes hitless, breaks Korean Big League record for consecutive games with a hit

(SEOUL) - Kim Ha-seong (27, San Diego Padres) has ended his streak of consecutive games with a hit.

He also fell short of setting a new record for consecutive games with a hit by a Korean big leaguer.

Kim went hitless in four at-bats while batting first and second against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks of the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S., on Wednesday (June 13).

His 16-game hitting streak, which began against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 25 and ended against Arizona on May 12, was snapped in the 17th game.

Kim tied the record for consecutive games with a hit by a Korean big leaguer (16), set by Choo Shin-soo (now with the SSG Landers) from July 3-23, 2013, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds. Despite hopes of breaking the record, the 13th was a hitless day.

In the top of the first inning, Kim led off with a walk and was hit by a 151-kilometer-per-hour fastball from Zach Gallon. Kim thought Gallon's fastball was out of the strike zone, but the umpire disagreed.

After a fly ball to right field in the third inning and a grounder to third base in the fifth, Kim returned to the plate for his final at-bat in the eighth.

His season batting average dropped from .290 to .286 (108-for-377).

He also failed to draw a walk, ending his streak of 20 consecutive games with a hit. Kim had a 19-game hitting streak from July 22 against the Detroit Tigers to Aug. 12 against Arizona.

San Diego fell to 0-3 against Arizona. Arizona snapped a nine-game losing streak.
