Tottenham's defense reinforcement project has begun.
British media outlet 'The Boot Room' reported on Tottenham's transfer market situation on the 21st (KST), citing a report by transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.
"Tottenham are set to enter the January transfer window to bolster their defense," the outlet reported.
"Spurs are 100% certain to sign a new center back in January," Romano said, adding that Nice's Jean-Claude Todibo, 23, is one of their top targets.
"He is not the only one. "He is not the only player on the list, but Tottenham have spent the last seven days talking to the player, his camp and Nice about the terms of his contract."
"Spurs want Todibo, but the timing will be important. Tottenham want to speed up the deal. They don't want to spend a month negotiating with Nice to sign Todibo."
Spurs have addressed their defensive issues to some extent this season. The back four is now complete under manager Enzi Postecoglou. The arrival of Micky van der Vaart last summer made that possible. His pace and footwork have added stability to the defense alongside Christian Romero.
But now it's a crisis. Vander Penn is out with injury and could be back in 2024. Romero won't be able to hold his own. If either Vanderpenne or Romero were to go down, there are no defenders to replace them. Postecoglou has used Eric Dier in the past, but his performances have dropped. That's why he wants a new center back.
Todibo is a long center back, standing at 190 centimeters. He made his first-team debut for Toulouse before joining Barcelona. After failing to establish himself at Barcelona, he was loaned out to Schalke, Benfica, and Nice. He joined Nice permanently in the 2021-22 season.
His impact has been significant since his move. In his first two seasons, he played at least 40 games. This season, he has played a total of 14 games. He's started all of them in Ligue 1.
The Frenchman has been compared to world-class defender Raphael Varane. His height and quick feet make him the next Baran.
'The Boot Room' says: "Todibo is an incredible talent with a lot of experience, great potential, and many strengths. His best attribute is his speed. He's ridiculously fast," and "Tottenham have the fastest center back in the league in Van der Vaart. If we get him, we can have a center back combination with the right-footed Todivo and the left-footed Van der Vaart."
