Bae Ji-hwan Promoted to Big League
Bae Ji-hwan (25, Pittsburgh Pirates), who started the season in the minor leagues due to injury, will return to the big leagues.
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Tuesday (Korea time) that they have registered Bae for the roster ahead of the game against the San Francisco Giants to be held at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bae will immediately start as the ninth batter and center fielder.
Having posted a batting average of 0.231, two homers, 24 steals, 32 RBIs and 54 runs in 111 games last season, Bae suffered a left hip injury during this year's spring camp. Since then, he failed to make the opening entry and started the season on the disabled list.
Even after recovering from his injury, however, Bae rarely received a call from the big leagues. Instead, he played for Indianapolis Indians, a Triple-A team under his team. In 27 Triple-A games, Bae hit hard with a batting average of 0.367 with four homers, seven steals, 15 RBIs, 23 runs scored, and OPS (on-base plus slugging) of 1.030.
As Bae Ji-hwan returned to the big league on this day, the number of Korean players playing on the major league stage this season increased to two, including Kim Ha-sung.
