Lately, I’ve been feeling that true care for the Earth must grow from within us, not be forced from outside.
If a person is at peace, joyful, and deeply aware, they naturally do only what is needed. They don’t overconsume, destroy, or wage wars — not because someone told them not to, but because their actions arise from inner harmony.
To reach this, what we need is not just more information about environmental problems, but to nurture:
Self-awareness – noticing our thoughts, emotions, and impulses
Self-regulation – calming our senses and desires (what Indian philosophy calls indriya nigraha)
Observation and connection-making – learning to see how everything is interwoven (rta)
Affective connection and beauty-sense – feeling love, wonder, and belonging with the living world (saundarya drishti)
Most mainstream environmental education focuses on:
facts about pollution, climate change, etc.
rules and actions (reduce, reuse, recycle)
problem-solving and activism
This approach can be useful, but it often misses the inner dimension — the being behind the doing. Without that, children may act from guilt or fear, not love or wonder.
Indian traditions have always seen human and nature as one whole. Some guiding ideas:
Panchamahabhuta — our bodies and the Earth are made of the same five elements.
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family.”
Ahimsa and Aparigraha — non-violence and non-possessiveness, born from inner contentment (santosh).
Prakriti and Purusha — nature and consciousness are deeply connected.
Dharma — living in alignment with the natural order (rta).
In this way, environmental care becomes a byproduct of self-awareness.
As Tagore said at Shantiniketan, children must “live in the lap of nature” and grow their sense of beauty and belonging. Krishnamurti also emphasized that education must help children see and be aware, not just collect knowledge.
So maybe the real question is not “How do we teach children to save the Earth?” But rather, “How do we help them fall in love with life?”
Because once that happens, they will naturally protect what they love. 💚
