45-story tower, 2,455 rooms at New Vegas Casino
On Aug. 24, a planning spokesman said local planners had approved casino mogul Steve Wynn's tentative proposal to build a 45-story mega-resort on the former Desert Inn site in Las Vegas.
Wynn, a former head of Mirage Resort, built a spectacular Mirage and Bellagio resort on the Las Vegas Strip and last year bought an aging Desert Inn for $270 million, around the time he sold it to MGM Grand to establish MGM Mirage.
But since leaving the public sector, he has been tight-lipped about his plans for a new project.
Under a proposal submitted by his company, Valvino Lamore, Wynn will build a 514-foot-tall resort tower with 2,455 rooms and 15 formal dining and entertainment venues on the Desert Inn site on Sands Avenue in Streep.
The proposal hints at a water theme that includes a three-acre swimming pool and a four-acre artificial lake.
The resort will include many elements that have become integral to the new Las Vegas mega-resort, including 70,000 square feet of retail, 132,000 square feet of conference and convention space, two showrooms, two chapels and 120,000 square feet of casino space.
Larry Klatzkin, an analyst at Jefferies & Co., said the resort's development could mark the beginning of a new wave of casino buildings on the northern end of the strip. The latest wave of construction ended with the opening of Aladdin last year and included other resorts, such as Paris Las Vegas and Venice.
"You've had a wave of construction every two to five years," Klatskin said on the strip, "and this is the beginning of the next wave. I'm absolutely confident Steve will be at the forefront of that."
