Short Track Coach Ahn Jung-hyun 'Definitely on Lim Hyo-joon' "Lin Xiaojun is Chinese now"

Short track coach Ahn Jung-hyun drew a clear line in the sand when asked about Lin Xiao-jun (Lim Hyo-joon), who naturalized in China.

The KB Financial Cup International Ice Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup 4th 2023-2024 media day was held at the Mokdong Ice Rink Press Center on Wednesday.

The sixth edition of this season's World Cup will be held in Montreal, Canada, on January 1 and 2, Beiji, China, on January 3, and Seoul, South Korea, on January 4. After that, it will conclude with the fifth edition in Dresden, Germany, and the sixth in Gdansk, Poland.

This is the second time the Short Track World Cup has been held in South Korea since the 2016-2017 season. The World Championships were held in March of this year and will be the second international event in 2023.

"As this is our second international event, we want to achieve better results, and we ask for the public's support," said Ahn Joong-hyun, who attended the media day.

He added, "Our individual performances at the World Cup this season have been good, but we have been struggling in the relay. I personally want to improve my performance in the relay," he said, adding, "I hope we can continue our good momentum at home and do well in the rest of the World Cup."

In the Q&A session that followed, questions were asked about the current form of the national team and Lin Xiaozhun.

"Hwang Dae-heon is in good shape," said Ahn. He's brightened up a lot since returning to Korea," while Shim Seok-hee, who has yet to perform well in tournaments, said, "His condition is improving. I think she will get better and better in terms of speed in the future."

As for Lin Xiaozhun, he said, "Lim Hyo-joon. He's a Chinese player now. Lin Xiaojun has received confirmation from the International Ice Skating Union (ISU) that he will not be able to compete due to an ankle injury," he said, adding, "We will aim for the team's overall performance rather than individual results."

Lin Xiaojun, a former short track athlete in South Korea, naturalized in China in 2020. Described as the "next Ahn Hyun-soo," he was expected to become the next big thing in South Korean short track.

After leading the men's short track team at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Lin split with Hwang Dae-heon in 2019 after a controversial incident at the Jincheon Athletes' Village, which led to a trial.

Although Lin was acquitted, she received a one-year suspension from the Korean Ice Sports Federation. She later chose to naturalize in China.

Due to a rule against athletes who change their nationality, she was banned from international competition for three years after naturalization, but this season she was able to compete in her first international competition for the Chinese national team.

First meeting with Hwang Dae-heon. At the first World Cup this season, Lin reached the final of the men's 1500 meters before being pipped by Hwang Dae-heon.

At the third edition of the World Cup, Lin was expected to travel to South Korea after competing in China, where he would once again face Hwang Dae-heon, but he did not even arrive due to an ankle injury.
