Enzo's Internal Disciplinary Action + Possible Suspension of 12 Games

In addition to internal disciplinary action, Enzo Fernandez may face additional disciplinary action from the British Football Association (FA).

At the last Copa America 2024, Argentina won the title. It won the trophy for two consecutive tournaments by beating Colombia 1-0 in the final.

Argentina's main star Enzo briefly stirred controversy with his racist remarks. Fernandez of Argentina turned on a live broadcast on his SNS account and shared his congratulations with his teammates on the bus. "They all play in France, but my parents are from Angola. My mother is from Cameroon and my father is from Nigeria. But my passport is France."

The song has clearly racist lyrics. The song was created to mock Argentina's fans who won the World Cup in Qatar by beating France. The lyrics mock Kylian Mbappe, a French national, by mentioning his parents' nationality.

The lyrics mocking the French have angered Enzo's French teammates as well. Chelsea include Wesley Fofana, Axel DiSassi, Benoit Badiacil, and Marlo Gusto. They reportedly canceled Enzo's SNS account. Even Fofana uploaded the live video clip on her SNS account and said, "Football in 2024: Unbridled racism." She couldn't hide her anger at the disappointing racist remarks of her colleague who lived together and worked with her on the ground.

Chelsea quickly issued a statement. "Chelsea cannot accept any form of discriminatory behavior. We thank the athletes for their public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate them. We have implemented internal disciplinary procedures (for Enzo)." Chelsea has already begun internal disciplinary procedures, not just simple training.

This could not be the end of internal disciplinary action. According to The Sun in the U.K., Udo Onwere, a lawyer specializing in sports, said that FIFA will delegate disciplinary action to the FA. He also predicted the level of disciplinary action in detail. He claimed that there could be a ban on players from six to 12 games.

It is a different situation from when Rodrigo Bentancur, a member of Tottenham Hotspur, made racist remarks to his teammate Son Heung-min. At that time, Tottenham drew the ire of fans for not making a quick statement unlike Chelsea, and recently, coach Enze Postecoglou also maintained a passive attitude, saying, "The important thing in the whole process is Son Heung-min. I will follow his reaction and decision. I'm sure there will be follow-up measures, but we have to follow his decision because the most important thing is Son Heung-min."
