Hwang Ui-jo, accused of 'illegal filming', removes Taeguk mark

South Korean men's soccer international Hwang Eui-jo, 31, of Norwich City, has been suspended from wearing the flag until he is fully cleared of any wrongdoing.

The KFA held a meeting on the afternoon of the 28th, attended by ethics committee chairman Lee Yoon-nam, power enhancement committee chairman Michael Mueller, tournament committee chairman Jeong Jung-sung, and vice chairman Choi Young-il, and announced that it had decided not to select Hwang Ui-jo for the national team until a clear conclusion was reached by the investigating agency. "We considered that a national athlete has an obligation to maintain honor with high morals and a sense of responsibility, and in that regard, he must manage his personal life and other aspects," said Lee Yoon-nam, chairman of the committee.

Earlier, Hwang Ui-jo was investigated by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on March 18 for violating the Sexual Violence Punishment Act (filming with a camera). Following this, it was revealed that a woman, Ms. G, a former lover of Hwang's and a victim of illegal filming, had filed a complaint against him with the police, stating that she had never consented to his filming.

Nevertheless, controversy erupted when Hwang came on as a substitute against China in the second Asian qualifier for the 2026 North and Central American World Cup, and national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann appeared to defend Hwang by citing the "presumption of innocence" principle.

Hwang returned to Norwich City after the A-League match and started and scored a goal against Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in the English Professional Soccer Championship (second division) on Sept. 26 (KST). Norwich City manager Davit Wagner said after the game: "Hwang has shown what a good footballer he is in a difficult situation. He has good technique, a great work ethic and a good understanding of the game."

Hwang is also facing "secondary offense" charges. He allegedly shared the video of the sex scene and Ms. G's contact information with his acquaintances. Earlier, Lee Eun-soo, a lawyer for Ms. G, who accused Hwang of illegally filming her, held a press conference on the 23rd and said that Hwang's brother, who was arrested for first distributing the video, said in court that Hwang had watched the video with his friends.
