PSG relinquish top spot, turn the ball around... Mbappe frustrated & angry - Enrique 'managed the risk'

"Ah , why turn the ball" - "I did my job".

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund in the sixth leg of their UEFA Champions League Group F match of the 2023-2024 season at the Zignale Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany, at 5:00 a.m. ET on Thursday.

The result sees PSG finish second in the group with eight points (two wins, two draws, two losses) and advance to the round of 16. At the same time, the match between AC Milan and Newcastle United ended in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory for Milan, giving them eight points as well, but PSG's goal difference advantage secured second place.

The group ended with Dortmund in first place with 11 points, PSG in second place with eight points, AC Milan in third place with eight points, and Newcastle in fourth place. Dortmund and PSG advanced to the Round of 16.

Dortmund struck first. In the sixth minute of the second half, Dortmund's strong forward pressure won the ball in a high area, and after collecting the ball near the goal, Pilkruk passed to an unmarked Adeyemi, who calmly slotted home to open the scoring.

PSG equalized shortly afterward. In the 11th minute of the second half, Mbappe, off a pass from Lee Kang-In, cut in from the left flank and sent in a low cross that was met with a deflected ball by Zaire Emery, who split the goal with a quick right-footed shot. At 1-1, Milan's lead over Newcastle left PSG needing only a draw to advance to the round of 16.

Luis Enrique called on all his players to go for the draw. With the game in hand, it was an understandable decision, as a single goal could have turned the tie on its head. PSG also introduced Manuel Ugarte for Lee in the 26th minute of the second half.

However, Mbappe was furious with Enrique's decision. "Enrique told his players to calm down as Milan took the lead and their progression looked assured," explained France's RMC, "but Mbappe was unhappy with the instructions."

In fact, Mbappe even reacted in disbelief when players played the ball behind him instead of giving him a pass. "Mbappe wanted to win at all costs to stay in first place, so he was very unhappy with Enrique's tactic of playing for a draw," RMC emphasized.

In his post-match press conference, Enrique responded directly to Mbappe's reaction, explaining that "it's natural for a player to be frustrated in that situation," but that "as a manager I have to manage the risks, even if it's just one individual player who is frustrated."In fact, if they conceded, PSG would fall behind Milan and fail to advance. Enrique said: "We had several scoring chances in the first half and didn't capitalize. It would be stupid to attack in the second 40 minutes and concede. I did my part," he emphasized.
