Macau records 8% increase in half-year tourists


Macau saw an 8% year-on-year increase in the number of tourists visiting its coast to just over 16.8 million, and the total for the month of June rose 9.4% to about 2.6 million.



According to official figures from the city's statistics and census bureau, the number of tourists visiting the former Portuguese enclave from mainland China during the first half of 2018 exceeded 11.7 million, up 13.3% year-on-year.

The six-month tally of mainland Chinese tourists who used the Individual Visit Plan visa program to enter Macau was about 810,000 300, up about 15% from a year earlier, according to data from the Statistics Bureau.

The semi-annual report showed that the majority of Macau tourists from mainland China came from nearby areas of Hunan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces, while about 1 million stayed overnight. This is an increase of 11.1% year-on-year.



The Field and Statistics Korea reportedly explained that the number of tourists visiting Macau from Hong Kong and Korea fell 3.7% and 2.2% year-on-year over the six-month period, respectively, although Taiwan's tally rose 0.9%.

Government agencies reported that while Taiwan and Hong Kong recorded growth rates of 7.8 percent and 2 percent, respectively, the number of visitors from Korea fell 13.4 percent year-on-year.


Figures from the Bureau of Statistics and Census showed Macau had about 8.7 million overnight stays in the six months to June 30, up 8.3 percent from the previous year, while the number of day travelers rose 7.8 percent to just over 8 million.

Finally, sources said the number of one-night stays in Macau rose 7.2% year-on-year to over 1.4 million in June, while the average stay was 1.3 days, which was inconsistent, while same-day visits rose 12.4% to nearly 1.2 million.
