MOP $11.58 billion ($1.43 billion), about 11% lower than January.

Continuously high figures:

The February 2023 level of $1.27 billion is the third-best regional gaming performance in three years, with $2.74 billion in January 2020 and $1.43 billion in January 2023. On a year-on-year basis, February 2023 represents only 41% of the MOP of $25.04 billion ($3.1 billion) recorded in February 2019. But this year's figures prove a full market recovery by posting revenue that has surged for the second straight month after hitting as low as MOP $3.98 billion ($49 million) in July 2022 at the peak of Macau's first major COVID-19 outbreak.

Recovery of the gaming industry:

This recovery is also reflected in the recent lifting of COVID-related regulations. Beginning early this week, Macau casino operators will not require employees and customers to wear protective masks within the resort in accordance with their government's mitigation policies. The milestone in these measures and the improvement in Macau gambling activities was Jan. 8, 2023, when gambling facilities reopened after months of closures ahead of China's Spring Festival events.

Many game operators noted that China's Lunar New Year holiday season led to the long-awaited recovery of the industry in January. That's when visits from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan resumed and the nearly 300 percent larger number of visitors settled at about 450,000 people.

Third best performance in three years:

The February GGR followed the same trend, although there were no holidays. The month was the third-best performer in the last three years, following January 2020 when the COVID restrictions performed best just before full implementation. It also scored the second best in January 2023, suggesting a much brighter future for the Macau industry.

Bright outlook:

January GGR was $1.43 billion and February sales were $1.27 billion. If this trend continues throughout the year, total game sales in 2023 are estimated to exceed $15 billion by the end of the year. This will be a higher GGR level than the previous three years. Indeed, the GGR in 2020 was only about $7.5 billion due to the pandemic, with sales of about $10.5 billion in 2021 and total sales of $5.3 billion in 2022. It will also be about the same as the total game revenue achieved in the previous two years.
