Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter of the National Basketball Association (NBA) received a severe punishment of permanent ban from playing for sports gambling.

According to local media such as AP and AFP on the 18th (Korean time), NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the results of the investigation and stated the reason for such heavy punishment was that Porter had committed a "serious crime of violating the principles."

Porter is known to have leaked inside game information to sports bettors while playing in the G League, the second division of the NBA.

In particular, the NBA Secretariat announced that he had informed the gambler in advance that he was injured and could not play.

The NBA added that this investigation is continuing and that it is sharing information with federal prosecutors.

Porter, who is also the younger brother of Denver Nuggets Michael Porter Jr., has been under investigation by the NBA since March after strange betting patterns emerged in games he played.

Porter informed a sports gambler he knew of his health condition before the game on March 21, and the gambler placed $80,000 (approximately 110 million won) in online bets.

If the bet had been successful, he would have made $1.1 million, but the payout was not paid out as the NBA began an investigation.

In addition, Porter was found to have used an acquaintance's betting account to place bets on at least 13 NBA games while playing for a G League team.

Porter appeared in 26 games in the 2023-2024 season, five of them as a starter, averaging 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Masai Ujiri, president of the Toronto club, held a press conference and expressed embarrassment, saying, "We prepare for various situations, but we did not want or expect something like this."
