Choo is experiencing a batting slump this season.
In 10 games, he had a batting average of 0.125 (three hits in 24 times at bat), RBI, three steals, and four scores. The report card was better than expected.
Choo injured his finger in a match against the Lotte Giants in Incheon on March 23, the opening day of this year's regular season. He was hit in the finger by a check ball thrown by Lotte pitcher Aaron Wilkerson while trying to steal a base.
A thorough examination showed that incontinence was caused in the ring finger of the right hand, and he was excluded from the first-team entry two days later on March 25.
Choo, who shook off his injury, returned to his team on the 11th of this month, but has continued to be disappointed. He had two hits and three runs in four at-bats against the KT Wiz in Suwon on the 13th, but had no hits in three consecutive games against the KIA Tigers in Incheon on the 16th and the LG Twins on the 19th.
In the end, Choo was excluded from the starting lineup in both games at the doubleheader against LG on Sunday. He played as a substitute, but failed to get a hit.
"I thought I should have given more time before I returned," SSG coach Lee Soo-yong said. "I pushed ahead boldly because I said it was okay, but the result turned out to be like this."
"Choo Shin-soo did not play in all exhibition games, and he was injured, so there were not many at-bats he played. It was not enough to fully enhance his batting performance," he added.
As the coach said, Choo returned home early due to enteritis during the second spring camp in Zai, Taiwan. As a result, he played in three exhibition games and only played nine times at bat. As he suffered an injury right after the opening of the season, he didn't have much time to adjust his senses.
Choo Shin-soo is scheduled to return to the starting lineup in the game against the Lotte Giants at Sajik Stadium in Busan on the 23rd.
"I plan to include it in the starting lineup again in the three consecutive games against Lotte," Lee said. "Choo Shin-soo talked with hitting coach Kang Byung-sik about his problems and supplemented them. Seeing him hit the ball, he said, "I think he will get better from the game against Lotte."
Choo Shin-soo has only one left in 2,000 hits in Korea-U.S. career.
Choo Shin-soo, who moved to the U.S. after signing a contract with the Seattle Mariners in 2001, played 16 seasons in the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2005 to 2020, and played as a top hitter.
He became the first Asian-born player to achieve .300-20 home runs and 20 steals (2009) and cycling hits (2015). He recorded 20 home runs and 20 steals based on the criteria of hota-jun people three times (2009, 2010, and 2013).
Currently, he has the most home runs (218) and most RBIs (782) from Asia.
Choo Shin-soo recorded a total MLB batting average of 0.275 218 home runs, 782 RBIs, 961 runs, and 157 steals.
He played in 1,652 games in the big league and had 1,671 hits in his career.
Choo Shin-soo, who entered the KBO League in 2021, has 328 hits in 371 games so far this year.
If he shakes off his sluggishness as Lee expected, Choo Shin-soo, who graduated from Busan Middle School and Busan High School, will set a meaningful record in his hometown.
Attention is focusing on whether Choo Shin-soo can set a meaningful record in his hometown and succeed in rebounding.
