Will Woo Hyeong-gyu and Yang Ha-eun defend the National Men's and Women's Table Tennis Championships?

Table Tennis Association will hold the Comprehensive Table Tennis Championships in Dangjin on the 9th.

Hyeong-gyu Woo (Mirae Asset Securities) and Ha-eun Yang (POSCO International) will challenge for their second consecutive title in the National Men's and Women's Table Tennis Championships.

The Korea Table Tennis Association will hold the '77th Shinhan SOL National Men's and Women's Table Tennis Championships' at the Dangjin Indoor Gymnasium in South Chungcheong Province from the 9th to the 15th.

The Table Tennis Championships is the table tennis competition with the longest tradition in Korea. In the Korean table tennis world, there are only two competitions with the title ‘championship’: the category championship and this competition. Unlike category competitions that determine winners by age (type), athletes of all age groups compete without distinction in this competition.

For this reason, not only adult athletes from the general and college divisions, but also promising elementary, middle, and high school players participate. Legendary player Ierisa Ierisa, who won 7 consecutive singles titles in this tournament, also achieved her first win when she was in her third year of middle school.

However, national team players who are active in various international competitions, such as the Pyeongchang Asian Championships and the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, will not participate. Current leading stars include men Lee Sang-soo (Samsung Life Insurance), Jang Woo-jin, Lim Jong-hoon (Korea Exchange), Ahn Jae-hyun (Korea Exchange), and women Jeon Ji-hee (Mirae Asset Securities), Lee Si-on (Samsung Life Insurance), Shin Yu-bin (Korean Air), and Kim Na-young (POSCO International). They are participating in the ‘International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Mixed Team World Cup’ held in Chengdu, China.

Accordingly, Asian Games representative and last year's women's singles winner Ha-eun Yang (POSCO International) and men's singles winner Hyeong-gyu Woo (Mirae Asset Securities) are aiming to achieve their second consecutive victory since last year.

Park Kang-hyeon (Korea Water Resources Corporation) and Oh Jun-seong (Mirae Asset Securities), who played in the Asian Games, and women's national team members Seo Hyo-won (Korea Racing Association) and Lee Eun-hye (Korean Air), who did not go to Chengdu, will challenge for the championship.

It is of interest whether the winning teams of last year's team competition, including Mirae Asset Securities in the men's division and POSCO International in the women's division, will remain at the top.

The game begins on the morning of the 9th. After the preliminaries are completed by the 12th, the mixed doubles and men's and women's doubles finals will be held on the 14th, and the men's and women's singles and men's and women's team finals will be held on the 15th, the final day. On the afternoon of the 14th, a retirement ceremony will be held for star Jeong Young-sik, who led the popularity of Korean table tennis.
