Turkiye, another Israeli soccer player investigated, contract terminated

Second in 4 days for 'showing solidarity with Hamas hostages'

Turkmenistan's leading soccer club Basaksehir announced on the 18th (local time) that it had terminated the contract with the club's Israeli player Eden Kazeb after he posted on social media demanding the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip by Hamas.

This incident occurred just a few days after Sagib Zehelskell, another Israeli player, was charged with inciting hatred after expressing solidarity with the hostages after scoring a goal during a game on the 14th and left for Israel a day later.

Zehelskel received loud cheers from the crowd upon his return to Israel.

Kazeb was investigated by Istanbul police after posting a message about the hostages' 100 days in captivity with the hashtag '#bringthemhomenow'.

Basaksehir launched a disciplinary investigation into him, saying, “Kazeb’s actions were against the sensitivities of Turkiye,” and after the investigation, “we imposed a fine on the player and decided it would be appropriate for him to continue his career abroad rather than in Turkiye.” “I did it,” he said.

Although both Zehelskel and Kazeb said they were only calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war, their actions were seen as support for Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip.

In Turkye, opposition to Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip is strong, and support for Palestine is overwhelming. While President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Hamas a liberation group, he accused Israel of “committing genocide.”
