The average number of hotel guests in Macau is about 91pct from December 23 to 26
Macau's average hotel occupancy rate for the Christmas festival from Dec. 23 (Sat) to Dec. 26 (Tue) was 90.8%, 2.7 percentage points higher than the November average of 88.1%, the Macau government tourism agency (MGTO) said in an update on Wednesday, citing preliminary travel sector data.
Hong Kong, a neighboring special administrative district of Macau, makes Christmas (Dec. 25) and the following day a holiday. In mainland China, Macau's main tourist attraction market, there is no holiday in December.
Macau has a total of 45,700 hotel rooms in operation as of October, according to the latest data from the Macau Statistical Office.
In its latest update, the MGTO said Macau saw a slight increase in visitor arrivals from Dec. 23 to Dec. 26 compared with the same period in 2019. The statement did not include an analysis of each of the travellers' markets of origin.
In the cited four days, Macau received "more than 456,000 visitors," or an average of about 114,000 visitors per day, up 1.3% from the same period in 2019, the MGTO said, broadly repeating preliminary data released earlier by Macau's public security police.
The Macau Tourism Authority said it expects the "next peak" timing of inbound travel to be the calendar New Year break on Jan. 1 and the Chinese New Year holiday.
Mainland China observes Jan. 1 (Monday) and the previous weekend as a public holiday to mark the start of the Year of the Dragon, and designates Feb. 10 (Saturday) to Feb. 17 (Saturday) as a public holiday, according to the State Council of China.
Hong Kong, which ranked second as Macau's tourism supply market, celebrates Jan. 1 as a public holiday and includes the Chinese New Year holiday from Feb. 10 to Feb. 13.
