Woodbine Ent. We're ending our record-breaking Standard Bread season

On Saturday, December 31, 2022, Woodbine Entertainment said goodbye to another successful calendar year and even more impressive Standardbread season. Over the weekend, the operator hosted the last race card of the season and the year at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The final card included a total of 10 races, including a preferred pace of C$34,000.

Earlier in December, the group reported all-source betting handles worth more than CA$400 million. Despite not being the season's official number, we have confirmed that the track hit a previous high of C$364 million in 2019. It should be mentioned that 2022 did not suffer from delays or cancellations like 2020 and 2021.

Just hours before the end of the calendar year, horse racing fans were able to see how Salzbrook Victor secured his first Woodbine Frederi victory in 1:52. The 4-year-old was guided to victory by Austin Surrey for trainer Ron McDonald and owner Brett McDonald. The win was the sixth of 38 starts in the 2022 season, moving the season's winning prize to more than C$150,000 in value.

James McDonald, who missed Saturday's podium, finished the season with the best reins, recording an impressive 400 wins. He became the fifth driver in the history of horse racing operators to win more than 400 races in a year. The last driver to reach 400 wins was his brother Mark McDonald, who won 404 races in 2006.

Meanwhile, trainer Richard Morrow and owner Brad Grant once again took the lead in their respective categories. Mr. Moro now holds the Woodbine Senior Trainer title for the seventh time in a row and has won 11 career titles. Mr. Grant also won the Woodbine Senior Owner's Title for the seventh consecutive time. The two will be honored on Monday, January 2, 2023.

The horse racing leader has notified that additional and complete numerical analysis of the 2022 Standardbread season at Woodbine Mohawk Park will be released in early January 2023. Meanwhile, the group said it will host the 2023 live racing season at Campbellville Track on Monday, January 2, 2023. The post time of the race card is set at 7 p.m.

In December 2022, Woodbine Entertainment announced that the 2022 purebred season has also entered the history book. In the calendar year, the group's woodbine racetrack recorded all-source single-season handles at C$621,782,346. The track also continued strong performance in overseas markets and posted a record amount of C$515 million in foreign handles.

Another important update from the horse racing leader was the announcement of the rebranding of the Queen's Plate. Due to the death of Elizabeth II, the historic thoroughbred race will be renamed the king's plate in honor of Charles III. The next race will be held at Woodbine Racecourse on August 20, 2023.
