Mainland China lottery sales fall by 13 pct Sept



Total lottery sales in mainland China fell 13.0% year-on-year to 36.4 billion yuan ($5.19 billion) in September, official data released by China's finance ministry showed on Thursday. Lottery merchandise sales fell for the eighth consecutive month, official data showed.

Welfare lottery sales fell 12.0% year-on-year to just over 15.69 billion yuan in September, data showed on Thursday. Sports lottery sales fell 13.8% year-on-year to nearly 20.71 billion yuan.

In the first nine months of 2019, all types of lottery sales in mainland China amounted to about 315.81 billion yuan, down 17.7% from the same period in 2018, according to the ministry. Welfare lottery sales fell 13.4% year-on-year to 143.11 billion yuan, while sports lottery sales fell 20.8% to 172.71 billion yuan.

Of the 31 provinces and cities in mainland China that were allowed to sell lottery tickets in September, only four recorded an increase in ticket sales.

Southwest Sichuan was the only province to see a rise in total sales of lottery products in the first nine months of 2019. Lottery sales in Sichuan totaled 14.15 billion yuan in the January-September period, up nearly 10.1%, according to the ministry's data.

Guangdong remained China's largest provincial market for lottery sales, according to the latest data. Nevertheless, total lottery sales fell 18.0% year-on-year to 29.47 billion yuan in the first nine months of the year.
