Casino Zai Alai to reopen by the end of the year with 30 game tables

Macau casino operator SJM Holdings Limited has reportedly decided that only 30 live gaming tables will be enough to open the redeveloped Casino Zai Alai venue before the end of the year.

According to a report in the Chinese-language Macau Daily News newspaper, a surprising revelation was made at the opening of a recent corporate event by Angela Leung-on-K, managing director of casino operator SJM Holdings Limited and a member of the Macau Legislative Council.

The newspaper reported that Leung, 56, did not explain where the 30 units for downtown properties would come from, as all previous table licenses were distributed to other SJM Holdings Limited locations after development closed in February 2013. It is unlikely that the property will receive a new market live gaming table license, as government policy four years ago seeks to limit the increase in these permits to 3%.

SJM Holdings Limited has announced that it will temporarily close Casino Jai Alai for redevelopment, while the company's chief executive, Ambrose Sauce Pie, announced last month that the new-look location is expected to end by October and will open before closing.

Earlier, the operator declared that the revamped property is expected to include approximately 130-room hotels alongside restaurants and stores, while SJM Holdings Limited explained that these new facilities will improve the business of the adjacent Casino Oceanus Popular Market Game Realty. As of the end of June, the Hong Kong-listed company had reportedly entered into a capital agreement for Casino Jai Alai worth about $718,072. The company's live gaming tables rely on licenses granted to SJM Holdings Limited, such as Macau Legend Development Limited and Landmark Macau Real Estate, as well as "satellite" casinos, which are managed by third parties but rely on licenses granted to SJM Holdings Limited, such as Casino Lisboa.
