Fantasies of a moral idealist.
My child, I will now tell you the ultimate technique of finding anything that seems to have disappeared. As you know, finding stuff that have been misplaced is no easy task, it creates a heavy amount of anxiety especially if many people are concerned about it. This heavy anxiety, in turn, becomes a trauma if it's regularly repeated.
When you are alone, it's easier to find things that you misplaced, not because you will find it easier but because you can easily accept its loss more. And since there's no one around you, you don't have anyone to blame and neither will anyone try to blame you. Whenever you are tired in finding, you can simply take a rest or let it go, maybe just replace it with a new one.
Like all things, situations get complicated when there are several people involved. Usually a situation about a missing item goes like this: a person misplaces things and forgot where they placed it, then they seek help from others only to be assaulted by heavy blame, gaslighting, and guilt-tripping.
Then the social tension in the air inevitably rise to dangerous levels the longer time goes on. And when this happens, people become emotionally agitated, they experience tunnel vision as their mind shifts from trying to find the missing object but escaping the situation either through aggression or withdrawal. The accumulated fatigue eventually becomes the trigger for explosive verbal violence while the person who lost the object gets constantly interrogated and prosecuted.
As you can see, my child, the emotional atmosphere isn't the best for making good decisions and finding missing items. Yet when everyone finally gives up and calms down, they would suddenly find the missing item in obvious places they didn't expect and people try to go on with their lives as if nothing happened.
So how would you resolve this situation? Ideally, at least one person involved should try to be rational and outspoken, directing others to thoroughly search every area in a systematic manner. Furthermore, it's important those who try to help have a choice to stop helping whenever they want and those who continue helping to find the missing item should be given adequate rest every half an hour. This reduces the burden of the helpers and gives the group a sense of direction they can follow.
My child, remember that if people are forced to help, if they are threatened to do good things, they will often do more harm than good to the progress of the group. But if they are given a choice, those who end up helping will be more motivated, plus this will also reduce aggressive or unpredictable behaviors within the group.
Another thing that can make this situation go smoothly is the addition of rewards to those who managed to find the item and some incentives to those who volunteered to help even if they didn't find the missing object. This policy maneuver turns the otherwise stressful situation into a fun and rewarding one. Of course, all those involved must know about these rewards and incentives. Even giving water and food to those who help is enough for them to remain motivated.
An ideal situation of finding an important missing object within a group should go like this:
"Everyone, the important key has been misplaced by Joe and we'll all be in trouble if we do not find it. But blaming does not solve anything, so let's all work together to find the key. We'll split into three teams and each team will thoroughly search a different area. Make sure to search through every nook and cranny, every corner and hole. After thirty minutes and we still didn't find anything, we'll take a break before trying to find it again. Those who don't want to help can leave. Those who managed to find it can choose a reward they want. Disperse."
See how wonderful that sounds? No explosive emotional outbursts, no gaslighting, guilt-tripping, and blaming. Everyone is coordinated and working together towards a single goal. Remember this my child, this is how you resolve a group conflict in the smoothest way possible. Of course, it's better if the item didn't disappear in the first place.
Now, we'll discuss how we can prevent the displacement of important items.
Ideally, we should place GPStickers on important items so that we should be able to locate them through GPS in our smartwatch, smartphone, and computer. However, this might not be possible with the current technology or you may not be able to afford it. Then in this case, one should always take a picture where they placed the important items after using it, so that they'll be more mindful and reduce the chances of misplacing the item.
For those who want to make it automatic, adding a CCTV camera watching the original storage of the item will be the best choice but not everyone would be able to afford it. Therefore, they must either rely on improvised sensory cues and rituals to prevent the loss of an item or make it easier to find if it suddenly disappeared.
If the item looks small and the color seems dull, it would be a great idea to tie or attach a large vibrant paper, string, or cloth to that item. If it should only be used within a specific place and can't be taken away, one should tie it down with a string or a knot to prevent anyone from taking it very far.
As for the rituals, those who doesn't have a phone camera can make a funny dance, noise, or signal that shows to everyone that they stored that item properly after using this. Thus, it will become a memory cue that will reinforce the neural connections related to that item, serving as a reminder for everyone to store it properly and return it after using.
In life, there are some nightmares where you will be the one to accidentally misplace that important item, setting you up for a terrible day. What will you do if this happens? How will you confront the crowd who are dying to blame and punish you? How will you face your own guilty conscience without drowning in self-blame? This situation will be addressed in the next section.
My child, the first thing you need to know is that you can never appease the crowd nor stop them from blaming you. However, you can do well to deal with your own guilty conscience and preserve your dignity as a human being instead of becoming a scapegoat. Oftentimes, this can help the crowd empathize with you and see you as a human being like them, not an evil spy who only exist to misplace their important items.
No, what you need to do first isn't to apologize but to admit the blame, taking all the responsibility and punishments that may come with it, even if it was just an accident that you didn't intend to do. In your own words and actions, you have to sincerely show them that you deeply regret your actions and that you understand the extreme anxiety they are feeling right now.
Although this may seem like letting yourself get crucified on the cross for something you didn't intend to do, you are actually saving yourself from the severe psychological torture they are about to give you. If you do not admit your mistake and apologize, the evil spirits have no choice but to constantly torture you with endless gaslighting, interrogation, guilt-tripping, and verbal abuse until their anxiety is finally satisfied (which will happen only if the missing item is found).
By simply admitting your mistake and sincerely apologizing, you can reduce the punishments they're planning to give you by 90%. Listen my child, they are not concerned whether you intentionally or accidentally lost the item. They simply want to relieve themselves from the intense anxieties and worries they are experiencing and they're going to do it even if it means projecting and transferring all of them to you, the supposed scapegoat.
Don't take it personally, my child. Nothing is ever personal in this world. It's not that they do not see you as a human being, it's that the crowd does not even see you at all. They are too anxious and their stomach is too upset that they only want to find a toilet to poop — and that toilet simply happened to be you. Don't blame them, my child. It simply happened that the socio-cultural environment they grew up in isn't advanced enough for them to learn how to be aware of their own mental states, much less be able to control it.
Even if they're not in the right mental state, you shouldn't simply let yourself become someone's toilet for their upset stomach. Even if you do try to admit your mistakes and apologize, there are still some of them that would verbally assault you. When this happens, it's important that you apologize again and try to understand. Because you are my child, be merciful and patient enough to be able to apologize for the third time if they try to gaslight or verbally assault you for the third time.
However, if they do it for the fourth time, you may simply tell them that you already apologized and that you will take responsibility for whatever happens. You can tell them that you won't have any time to find the missing item if you have to keep apologizing to them when you already did it many times. If they still keep trying to gaslight or verbally assault you for some reason, you may simply ignore them without speaking a word, even if they are the authorities.
Don't worry, my child. Situations don't often escalate to this point. Usually, people become more relaxed and less aggressive once you have already admitted your mistake and apologized once. And when the people are in the right state of mind, you can systematically lead them all towards finding the missing item.
There are times where the crowd can blame you for a missing item when you don't have any connection to it at all. In this case, admitting your mistake when it's something you didn't clearly do sounds so absurd and ridiculous. What will you do? My child, there's no need to apologize or admit your mistake because doing so would only be lying to yourself and others.
Still, you should still try to comfort them and help them find the missing item, show them that you care even if you don't have any connection to it. In this way, you can save yourself from the possibility of getting crucified for something so absurd while reducing the emotional tension in the atmosphere.
Even then, not all missing items can be found. Once you have already searched in every nook and cranny, in every possible area, yet without any results, then chances are, the item has been swallowed by the void. It's okay if you want to give up and stop finding the lost item at this point. It's also okay if you want to keep finding it but do it tomorrow when everyone's feeling better and well-rested, that way you'll have higher chances of finding it.
Just like people, it's normal for objects to disappear without any rhyme nor reason. Everytime you are searching for a missing item, you must have already accepted the possibility that it might have already disappeared forever. Yet if you search for a missing item with the mindset that it can never be found, then there would be no point in searching. My child, keep in mind the uncomfortable possibility that it could be lost forever, but also don't forget that you are searching for it because it might still be there, waiting to be found.
"Not all those who wander are lost, not all those who are lost can be found."
