FY21 Indian Games Revenue Up 40% YoY
The National Board of Indian Gaming (NIGC) released its 2021 (Fiscal 2021) gross gaming revenue (GGR) report, which represents a 40% year-over-year increase of $39 billion.
The latest figures represent the highest revenue figures in Indian gaming history and all administrative districts have reported positive year-over-year revenue growth. The year-over-year growth is also the biggest reported since NAGC began recording revenue figures.
However, NGIC noted that earnings fluctuations have been significantly impacted by the pandemic shutdown and that positive trends will take some time to indicate the overall health of the industry.
The report was officially released yesterday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with E. Sequoya Simmrier, chairman, and Ginni Hovland, vice chairman.
In response to the results, Simmermeyer said:
"The NIGC acknowledges that this year's rebound doesn't feel the same for all tribes. We are committed to helping all tribal operations benefit from the regulatory lessons learned over the past two years. To build the readiness of regulatory staff, every part of the Indian gaming industry has a responsibility to learn from the tribal experience that created the path, so we can preserve that lesson and maintain that knowledge for the next generation."
He went on to add:
"We experienced record numbers of business closures last year, but there was also growth as new operations began. This shows that game operations and shortages are making tough decisions as we rebound from the pandemic."
Hovland said the positive results also reflect Indian game geography, population and financial diversity:
"The industry has a lot to celebrate and be proud of. With 43 gaming businesses reporting over $250 million in GGR and accounting for over 50% of total revenue, this year's revenue highlights the broad diversity of gaming businesses across Indian countries."
Revenue for fiscal 2021 was calculated using independent audit financial statements related to 510 gaming operations owned by 243 federally recognized tribes across 29 states.
