Yang Hyun-jun fails to join the U23 Asian Cup due to refusal to be selected for his team Hong Si-hoo appointed as replacement

Yang Hyun-jun (Celtic), who was selected as the 'Hwangseonhongho', was not able to participate in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 (U23) Asian Cup due to his team's refusal to be selected. Hong Si-hoo (Incheon) replaces Yang Hyun-jun.

On the 5th, the Korea Football Association said, “Celtic FC, the team of Yang Hyun-jun, who was included in the 23-player entry to participate in the final Olympic qualifiers, has finally informed us that he will not be selected. “The association has selected Hong Si-hoo as a replacement,” the announcement said.

As coach Hwang Seon-hong expressed concern about the timing of the 'foreign faction' joining during the recent convocation training held in Korea, Yang Hyun-jun's joining was ultimately not decided. Since this competition was being held during the European league season, permission to be called up from each team was required first.

In addition to Yang Hyun-jun, a total of five overseas players were included in the final list of the Olympic team, including Kim Ji-soo (Brentford), Bae Jun-ho (Stoke City), Kim Min-woo (Dusseldorf), and Jeong Sang-bin (Minnesota United).

However, due to Yang Hyun-jun's inability to be called up, the Asian Cup was played with 4 overseas players out of 23 players.

Meanwhile, the Olympic team led by coach Hwang Seon-hong leaves for its base camp in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) via Incheon Airport this afternoon.

On the 10th, Hwang Seon-hong moves to Doha, Qatar, the battle site, to prepare for the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup. A total of 16 teams will participate in this competition, which also serves as the final Asian qualifier for the Paris Olympics, and 3.5 Olympic tickets are at stake. The top three teams will qualify for the Olympics, while the fourth-place team will play an intercontinental playoff against Guinea in Africa. Korea will start with the first match of the group stage against the UAE on the 17th, the second match against China on the 19th, and the third match against Japan on the 22nd. The top two teams from the group stage advance to the quarterfinals. In this competition, Korea will attempt to become the first country in the world to advance to the finals of its 10th consecutive Olympic Games.
