Macao Post August Visitor Count Improved

Macau reportedly saw an 18.7% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers last month as around 3.4 million people traveled to enjoy the vast swath of shops, hotels and casinos of its former Portuguese enclave.

The August tally, official information from the city's statistics office, represents the biggest 2018 increase since July, when monthly tourist numbers improved 4% year-on-year to just over 3 million.

According to official figures, the number of visitors to Macau from mainland China rose 25.3% year-on-year in August to just over 2.5 million, most of whom traveled relatively close to nearby Guangdong and Hunan provinces. As such, the 31-day tally of people traveling to the city using the huge country's individual-visit-plan exit permit system reportedly rose 31 percent to about 1.3 million.

The Statistics and Census Bureau said Macau saw a 5% year-on-year increase in the number of tourists arriving from Hong Kong to 556,372 in August, while the number of tourists from Taiwan rose 1.7% to 94,123. The city of about 651,000 reportedly posted relatively better numbers last month in terms of the number of tourists from the U.S., Canada, Australia and the U.K., although South Korea's tally of 66,052 was 12.6 percent lower.

August figures showed that Macau saw a 16.3 percent year-on-year increase to nearly 1.8 million people per night, while the number of visitors on the day rose 21.6 percent to 1.6 million. However, official figures showed that the average stay was just over 7.6%, staying at 1.2 days.

The August figure means Macau has attracted about 23.25 million tourists since the beginning of 2018, up about 8.9% year-on-year. In addition, the eight-month period detailed that mainland China remains the city's largest tourist source, with a tally of 16.4 million representing a 14.2% increase.

All of this helped Macau record $3.29 billion in total gaming revenue in August, up about 17.1% year-on-year and making the month of 2018 the most profitable month in the city.
